(2025: Spring – Summer)

About Cedar Run

Cedar Run is a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of New Jersey’s wildlife and habitats through education, conservation and rehabilitation. Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge sits on 171 wooded acres on the edge of the New Jersey Pinelands. Cedar Run includes the Woodford Nature Center, an outdoor Wildlife Housing Area with nearly 60 native residents, and a Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital. The overall mission of Cedar Run is to serve as a community resource on the importance of protecting and enhancing healthy ecosystems for all. To that end, Cedar Run engages in: ecologically based land management; the operation of a Federally and NJ State licensed hospital facility that cares for more than 7,000 injured, orphaned or displaced native wildlife each year; the education of over 20,000 students annually through our various on-site and outreach programs; and serves as an active resource to the greater New Jersey community on all wildlife and habitat related questions and issues.

Position Title: Conservation Ecology Research Intern 

Department: Education

Reports to: Research Lead & Director of Education

Schedule: 10-20 hours a week, 8-12 week commitment

Type:  Unpaid

  • Summer Internship (8-12 weeks): 4/14/2025 / Internships typically run from mid-May –August

Purpose of Position:

The Conservation Ecology Research Intern will work primarily with the Research Lead and the Research Team on all stages of Cedar Run’s Conservation Mission including landscape ecology research, Bluebird and Screech Owl nest box monitoring, education presentations, and scientific writing.

They are also responsible for assisting in tasks such as preparing for special events, public programs, and media outreach. They will provide field technician assistance on our newest conservation initiative in the Landscape Ecology Project surveying the various flora and fauna across the property. 

The position will be accepted on a rolling basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with all stages of data collection and site monitoring to compile a dendrological species assessment
  • Assist with all stages of data collection and site monitoring to compile a mammalian and avian species assessment
  • Assist with trail maintenance and invasive species management
  • Learn and implement tree sampling and survey techniques
  • Assist with all scientific writing
  • Assist the Research Team with nest box monitoring and management 
  • Media outreach: social media articles, blog posts, and vlogs/ newsletters
  • Development and implementation of education programs with a focus on Citizen Science
  • Learn the background and natural histories of Cedar Run
  • Perform various office-related tasks as necessary
  • Act in a manner to positively represent Cedar Run
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled college student in Environmental Studies, Biology, Ecology, or related field
  • Interest and excitement for Cedar Run’s mission to protect and preserve New Jersey’s wildlife and habitats through education, conservation, and rehabilitation
  • Strong interest and enthusiasm for the outdoors and sharing nature and the environment with various stakeholders and the public 
  • Familiarity with iNaturalist, ArcGIS, Merlin, and Cornell Lab of Ornithology
  • Familiarity with New Jersey’s Pineland species 
  • Proficiency in Google Docs, Google Slides, and Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to hike over uneven terrain in all weather including hot and humid, freezing, or rainy
  • Must have access to a vehicle or transportation
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds safely and work outdoors in varying weather
  • Must be able to work on-site in the office (4 Sawmill Road, Medford, NJ)
  • Some weekend work will be required, as scheduled
