Government Affairs Intern
Position Description:
Government Affairs Intern or Practicum Student - Paid
Primary Hours: Between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Monday thru Friday, August ‘25 thru May ’26)
Payroll Status: Temporary, 15-20 hours per week
Pay Rate: $12/hr for Undergraduate Students, $15/hr for Graduate Students
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Government Affairs intern or practicum student is responsible for assisting the Director of Government Affairs with legislative and regulatory efforts to meet member needs and achieve association priorities. This position works closely with and reports to the Director of Government Affairs and the President/CEO.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Support grassroots organizing and engagement with political candidates.
- Attend regularly scheduled meetings with state and federal agencies such as the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.
- Schedule meetings with a variety of stakeholders as needed.
- Attend LeadingAge conferences, regional roundtables, legislative coffee chats, or evening socials for networking with aging services professionals, legislators, or other government officials.
- Track and analyze relevant state legislation as it moves through the process utilizing KanFocus.
- Record and report back on committee hearings to the Government Affairs team.
- Send out weekly legislative blasts to members through MemberClicks and assist with the Aging Advocate podcast.
- Formulate action alerts utilizing VoterVoice platform.
- Research policies, regulations, statutes, and other relevant practices to support the association’s stance.
- Assist with drafting and submitting testimony.
- Provide positive customer service experience to members.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
- Effective problem-solving skills.
- Ability to multitask and juggle competing deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and with others.
- Knowledge of Microsoft suite products, Adobe products, and video conferencing.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Lift and move items up to thirty (30) pounds.
- Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work on the computer for hours at a time and concentrate on detailed information.
- Must be able to speak and listen effectively.
