Industrialized Housing & Buildings Program Intern

The Industrialized Housing & Buildings (IHB) Program is dedicated to ensuring that modular structures meet high standards of safety and quality. By certifying manufacturers, reviewing plan reviews, conducting inspections, and providing technical assistance, the IHB Program plays a vital role in promoting safe and reliable housing and commercial spaces for the people of Texas.

These structures are constructed in one or more modules at a manufacturing facility and transported to the installation site, where they are assembled into a complete building designed for use as commercial spaces or permanent residences. The program rigorously enforces compliance with state-mandated codes and standards, ensuring these buildings meet stringent safety, durability, and energy efficiency requirements. Through its efforts, the IHB Program fosters innovation in construction while ensuring that modular buildings provide safe, sustainable, and cost-effective solutions for Texas communities.

General Description

The Industrialized Housing & Buildings Program Intern is responsible to the Program Team Lead and Section Manager. The Intern’s role will include reviewing plan reviews received, assisting with common incoming workload, and contacting manufacturers, third-party inspectors, third-party inspection agencies and design review agencies. The Industrialized Housing & Buildings Program Intern is provided training to perform tasks and would learn the different types of registrants and the regulation of state laws and rules.

Essential Duties

  • Assist with researching and entering inspection results into the database. 
  • Assist with reviewing the plan reviews by verifying that paperwork is complete.
  • Contacting manufacturers, third-party inspection and design review agencies for documents, when necessary. 
  • Attends professional development and career readiness programs facilitated by the Human Resources and Operations Support Division. 
  • Demonstrates a spirit of teamwork, offering positive and constructive ideas, encouragement, and support to other members of the staff and team, while upholding the Agency’s core values. 
  • Keeps management appropriately informed of ongoing activities and critical matters affecting the operations and well-being of the Programs and the Department. 
  • Adheres to all Department procedures and personnel policies and performs other related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Currently enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in government, health administration, business administration, or a related field. Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum of 12 semester hours earned at time the intern application is submitted. For fall and/or spring semester internships, undergraduate applicants must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and graduate applicants must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours. Applicants must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale OR "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system. Must have internet connection, computer or laptop, and office workspace at home.

Applicants must have completed the TXWORKS Student Eligibility Form and submit letter of eligibility and college transcript with internship application. 

Remarks:

Knowledge about the Elimination of Architectural Barriers program and the applicable statute and rules in Texas. Skill in working in the Office 365 suite programs, such as Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc. Ability to implement administrative systems and procedures; to interpret rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; and, to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to read reports regarding compliance with the Texas Accessibility Standards.
