Seasonal Agronomy Intern - Crop Scout

Experience: The scout must be at least 18 years old, outgoing, have an interest in agriculture, enjoy the outdoors, pay attention to detail, take direct orders, and be physically able to work long hours during busy times. He/she must have reliable transportation and maintain a valid driver license with minimal infractions.

Duties: The scout is responsible for carrying out the duties laid before them by the supervising crop consultant. The following is an approximate time breakdown.

  • 95% Cropland Field Work: Duties include scouting, crop monitoring, and soil sampling. Corn, hay, wheat, and soybean crops are monitored for population, pests, weeds, and general health. Reports on findings are then submitted to the farm and the supervising consultant. The scout is the consultant’s eyes in the field and precise, accurate information is necessary.
  • 5% Training: Hands-on training will be provided by the supervising consultant and other CMA personnel. Scouts are encouraged to make judgment calls, but consultants are available to answer any questions.

Equipment: All equipment necessary to complete the assigned task will be provided, but reliable transportation is essential. Mileage will be reimbursed according to the IRS standard rate.

Employment Duration: The scout position is seasonal, lasting from mid-May through mid-August.

Location: We have several positions located throughout western and central New York.
