12-month contract, with possibility of extension contingent on funding. 

 

Pay and Schedule 

$30/hour, 20 hours per week (Monday-Friday, flexibility around specific start/end times based on applicant)

Location 

In-person at The Welcoming Center’s Center City office and South Philly Bok Building, with some remote days and occasional travel to the Hanwha Philly Shipyard

Position Summary 

TWC is seeking a part-time ESOL Curriculum Developer and Instructor to support the Global Skills Union Pathway Project (GSUPP), a workforce development initiative designed to connect immigrant participants to high-demand union jobs in the skilled trades industries at Hanwha Philly Shipyard. This 12-month, 20 hours/week position involves revising and delivering English language instruction integrated with career readiness training. The role will include developing customized curriculum for English for Workplace Communication at the Philly Shipyard, Career Readiness Training, and supporting other specialized training providers. The instructor will work closely with other TWC staff, the Philadelphia AFL-CIO, Hanwha Philly Shipyard, and other partners to enhance participants’ language proficiency and job skills, enabling them to access upwardly mobile career opportunities and improved social and economic integration.  

 

Responsibilities

Curriculum Development: Redesign and adapt existing ESOL and job readiness curriculums based on employer input and training materials to be aligned with the needs of the Shipyard’s Apprenticeship training program. Revise lessons based on staff, partner, and participant feedback for each new cohort cycle. 

Instruction: Teach the English for Philly Shipyard course and the Career Readiness course, each of which are comprised of integrated lessons that combine ESOL and job readiness skills around topics such as working at the Hanwha Philly Shipyard, workplace culture, communication, and conflict resolution. 

Assessment and Progress Tracking: Use both standardized and authentic assessments to monitor student progress, adjusting teaching strategies as needed. 

Participant Engagement: Build strong, supportive relationships with learners, offering regular feedback and guidance, fostering a positive learning environment. 

Collaboration: Work with the TWC staff, the Philadelphia AFL-CIO, and Hanwha Philly Shipyard to ensure that programming is integrated with TWC’s workforce development and career readiness programming. Attend workshops conducted by external partners and provide feedback and support to ensure alignment with participant and program goals.  

Career Readiness Integration: Support career readiness components such as resume writing, interview skills, job search strategies, and mentoring. Assist with job placement efforts and individualized support for program participants. 

Outreach and Community Engagement: Support in recruitment and outreach efforts, including promoting the program to local institutions and organizations. 

Data Collection: Support program administration activities, such as data collection for program evaluation, including pre- and post-assessments, participant feedback, and progress tracking in Salesforce and other platforms. 

In all duties, demonstrates a commitment to organizational core values which uplift the skills, experiences, and aspirations of program participants and recognize their role as agents of the change they seek.  

 

Required Education & Experience: 

Minimum of a bachelor's degree and certification in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL / TEFL); a combination of education and experience will also be considered. 

2-3 years of experience teaching adults in a community-based setting.  

2-3 years of experience with adult education curriculum development for English language learners. 

Familiarity and experience with a range of adult education pedagogical approaches. 

Strong commitment to and demonstrated experience with participant-centered, asset-based, relational approaches to education and community-building. 

Excellent verbal, written, and telephone communication skills. Comfortable adapting communication style to a diverse range of participants. Demonstrated evidence of ability to navigate conversations which may be difficult due to language, culture, and other circumstances which may lead to misunderstanding.  

Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Google Drive, Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and digital literacy/remote learning tools. 

Detail-oriented, creative thinker with strong sense of initiative and commitment to equity. 

 

Preferred Education & Experience:  

Lived experience from immigrant and refugee communities and/or communities of color.  

Master’s degree preferred – or five years of progressive experience in ESOL instruction, adult education, training, facilitation, or workforce development fields. 

Experience in workforce development, such as teaching job readiness skills such as job interviews, resume and cover letter development, conflict resolution, and workplace culture. 

Experience in digital skills instruction or curriculum development for English language learners or adults with limited digital skills proficiency.  

Experience using Salesforce. 

Bilingual ability is a plus, though not required. 

 

Work environment  

Operates in a professional office environment or remotely. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.  

 

Physical demands  

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.  

Must be able to lift 5-10 pounds at times.
