Senior Leadership Team Position

Full Time (1.0 FTE), Salary/Exempt

Year Long Schedule (12-Month)

The Bush School, a K-12 progressive, independent school located in Seattle, WA, is in search of an individual to join our Senior Leadership Team as Director of Community Life, Equity, and Inclusion. This role reports directly to the school’s Head of School and works closely with other Senior Leadership Team members to provide strategic leadership for diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the school as well as lead tactical and programmatic implementation of these efforts. The director is expected to prioritize and engage fully in the life of the school, through advising, facilitating workshops for students, faculty, staff, and parents, and representing Bush in the broader Seattle independent school community.  The director will also coordinate the efforts of all CEI team members and serve as a resource, guide, and strategic planner, helping the school sustain a community that values and affirms a diversity of people, perspectives, ideas, ways of learning, and contributions.  With a strong vision for integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion in the K-12 community, the director will be fully embedded in the work of the school and committed to steering change, providing counsel, pushing limits, and supporting the community.

The director will lead strategic planning and execution of CEI practice throughout the school. They will partner with key constituencies (head of school, senior leadership, faculty, staff, students, parents, Trustees) to continually assess the quality and efficacy of CEI programming by prioritizing the following:

Strategic Priorities: 

  • Develop and operationalize a CEI strategy for Bush that will provide a long-range road map for the school to follow with regards to skills alignment, professional development, scope and sequence for the curriculum, admissions, and hiring
  • Using the CEI strategy, create tactical plans and programming for key areas of focus
  • Continue to build and strengthen community and culture at Bush by helping to diversify student enrollment and staffing, and providing counsel on retention efforts for both
  • Be an advocate and spokesperson for the importance of CEI practice in formative education, and communicate regularly about efforts, progress, and accomplishments
  • Interact with and support students, faculty, and staff in a manner that goes beyond strategy-setting to true connection with a visible and sustained presence on campus and throughout the Bush community
  • Work in partnership to ensure an environment at Bush where all students and families feel that they belong

While other duties may be assigned, a qualified candidate will be able to manage the position’s key responsibilities and duties listed below: 

Essential Functions: 

  • Provide strategic leadership and foster collaboration by working closely with the K-12 CEI Coordinator, divisional CEI program coordinators, and the faculty and staff CEI committee members within each division. Assist in strengthening our divisional CEI teams and creating a unified effort and cohesive framework that advances our K-12 CEI mission and drives meaningful school-wide impact
  • Serve as a member of and act as the staff liaison for the CEI committee of the Board of Trustees
  • Support the head of school in achieving the CEI goals in her annual work plan
  • Create opportunities to promote, foster, and celebrate CEI at Bush among the school’s constituents — including, students, Trustees, faculty, staff, administrators, parents/ guardians, and alumnae/i
  • Serve on the school’s Senior Leadership Team and collaborate with school leadership, faculty, staff, and students to forward the CEI initiatives of the Board
  • Collaborate with the division directors, assistant head of school for K-12 programs, and manager of people and culture in the recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff. This includes, but is not limited to participating in hiring fairs, traveling to recruit, and representing the office on hiring committees 
  • Collaborate with the Admissions Office in the recruitment, admission, and retention of students and families. This includes, but is not limited to, participating in Admissions Open Houses and local community admissions events, serving on Admissions committees, advising the director of enrollment management on enrollment decisions, and serving on enrollment management committees if needed to support student success
  • Develop and provide ongoing professional development opportunities for faculty to help them understand the critical nature of CEI in their pedagogical and curricular practice
  • Serve as a liaison to student affinity groups that advance the goals of CEI at The Bush School
  • Partner with the Families Association to advance CEI work within the Association, including, but not limited to, organizing educational (evening) workshops for families, supporting affinity groups, hosting and/or attending events that engage members of the Bush community in building an inclusive community
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience and Professional Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree and at least 3–5 years of related CEI experience preferred
  • Experience leading CEI work in K–12 schools required and experience executing CEI programming outside of schools welcomed
  • Training, education, or background in CEI education, with experience supporting the development of inclusive communities and diversity in curricula programs (both in adult and student communities)
  • Represent the best interest of the school, its mission and strategic priorities
  • Strong organizational and management skills with a proven ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a timely manner
  • Prioritize the school’s CEI objectives, outreach, and retention efforts over other professional opportunities
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Willingness to work weekend and evening events as needed in order to meet the school’s needs and the team’s objectives
  • Demonstrated success in making a school or organization better with CEIB practice
  • Previous experience in school administration required
  • Ability to understand curricula (teaching experience a plus)

  • Desire to be involved in the day-to-day operations of CEI programming and to partner with others on the SLT in Divisional CEI initiatives 
  • A thought-partner, strategic-thinker, and problem-solver who can connect dots, anticipate issues, and take action
  • Authenticity and empathy
  • Straightforward, honest, hold people accountable, and be unafraid to have difficult conversations
  • A motivator who can inspire trust, belief, and engagement in creating positive change
  • Ability and desire to show up, be present, see and hear people
  • Passionate about and skilled in working with adults and children across the K-12 age range. 

Additional Requirements:

  • Have a current Adult and Children CPR, First Aid and AED Certification (or receive one soon after hire date).
  • Meet the school’s standards when completing two separate background screenings.

Compensation/Benefit Information for this position:

  • Salary Range: $130,000– $155,000 (based on years of experience)
