Position Summary
The Research Assistant is a position within the Pew Research Center’s Internet & Technology team which produces reports exploring the impact of the internet and technology on families, communities, work and home, daily life, education, health care, and civic and political life. Key topics include: technology adoption, social networking and social media, mobile connectivity, artificial intelligence, and digitally-relevant policy issues such as privacy, cybersecurity and harassment. The Center is particularly interested in candidates who are immersed in digital life, understanding the emergent social and political activities that occur on social media and other platforms.
Research Assistants are involved in all aspects of the survey research process within the Internet team, including questionnaire development, data management, statistical analysis, quality control, reporting of survey results, and data visualization. For all of these tasks, attention to detail and individual judgment are critical. This position works closely with other researchers on staff and reports to the Associate Director of Research.
Primary Responsibilities
- Creating tables and charts in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Data management.
- Statistical analysis of survey data.
- Building and checking toplines.
- Coding responses to open-end questions.
- Questionnaire development, research and quality control.
Education/Training/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Background in data management and analysis required.
- Experience with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Training in quantitative skills, including SPSS or other statistical software.
- Background in Social Science preferred.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Background in internet and technology topics, including tech policy, digital life, and emergent technologies
- Strong verbal, written and graphical communications skills.
- Detail oriented and well organized.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and impartiality in all work products.
- Ability to work well in a team setting.
- Ability to balance numerous tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
The typical starting salary for this position is $59,900
Location
Pew Research Center staff are required to be present in the Center’s Washington, D.C., office two core days weekly (Tuesday, Wednesday). Staff may work virtually from remote locations on other days in a typical work week.
