Behaviors:
Excellent Communication Skills: Sales professionals must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with customers, colleagues, and management. This includes active listening, articulating product features and benefits, and addressing customer concerns.
- Customer Service Orientation: A focus on providing exceptional customer service is paramount. This involves being attentive to customer needs, offering assistance promptly, and ensuring a positive shopping experience. This may look like approaching customers every hour to directly assist in their shopping. It could also include a casual conversation to help better direct the customer if you notice them looking lost.
- Product Knowledge: Deep understanding of the products or services being sold is crucial. Sales professionals should be able to answer questions, provide recommendations, and highlight key features to help customers make informed purchasing decisions.
- Adaptability: The retail environment can be fast-paced and ever-changing. A sales professional needs to be flexible and adaptable to different situations, whether it's dealing with busy periods, handling customer complaints, or learning about new products. This also refers to flexibility when coworkers are out or need assistance. This may pertain to scheduling needs as well.
- Empathy and Patience: Dealing with diverse customers requires empathy and patience. Sales professionals should be understanding of varying customer needs and preferences and be able to handle challenging interactions calmly and professionally.
- Positive Attitude: Maintaining a positive and enthusiastic demeanor can have a significant impact on customer interactions and sales outcomes. A friendly and approachable attitude helps build rapport and encourages repeat business. A friendly banter between employee and customer is always encouraged. Make sure the conversation is kept light so as to not confuse yourself or leave room for mistakes. Remember you are always “on”.
- Team Player Mentality: Collaboration with colleagues is often necessary in a retail environment. Sales associates should be willing to work cooperatively with others, assist teammates when needed, and contribute to a positive work culture.
- Attention to Detail: Accuracy is important when processing transactions, handling merchandise and inventory, and maintaining store displays. Sales professionals should pay close attention to detail to ensure tasks are completed correctly and efficiently.
- Salesmanship: While being pushy is not recommended, sales professionals should possess persuasive skills to influence customer purchasing decisions. This involves recognizing sales opportunities, making relevant product suggestions, and effectively closing sales.
- Goal-Oriented: Each channel has sales targets or goals to meet. Sales professionals should be motivated to achieve or exceed these targets, while still prioritizing customer satisfaction. Additionally, we will all be assisting, in any way we can, the other sales channels to help meet their goals.
- Register Behaviors: If you are the main sales associate at the register, which will happen sometimes, you are expected to go out to the sides closest to the checkout area and straighten up, make lists of things to restock when the next person comes back, and assist customers. You may be able to ask the freight team to assist in pricing products or check small things in at the front (if trained). You should always be doing something.
By embodying these behaviors, sales associates can contribute to the success of the business while fostering positive relationships with customers and colleagues alike
