Tate's Day Camp is hiring an Aquatics Director to oversee our 3 saltwater swimming pools, boating pond, and eight person certified lifeguard swim staff.

Overview

The aquatics director is responsible for overseeing the planning, development, execution, and supervision of aquatic activities including the 3 outdoor saltwater swimming pools and the fishing/boating pond. This role requires a passion for creating positive and enriching experiences for children, strong organizational skills, and the ability to lead a team of lifeguards. The ideal candidate will have experience in teaching swimming, lifeguarding, education, recreation, childcare programs, or a related field and possess excellent communication and leadership skills.

  • Camp Dates: May 27-August 1

Qualifications

  • Strong organizational, multitasking, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of child development and experience working with children.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team. Training and experience in pool and swimming activities.
  • Lifeguarding certifications and WSI certification or prior experience teaching lessons.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certifications that are considered part of the lifeguard training.
  • Knowledge of pool management.
  • Ability to supervise and direct staff.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in an aquatic environment.
  • Ability to relate to one's peer group.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.

Additional Requirements

  • Be available for the entire summer with no weeks off unless discussed with the director prior to accepting the position.
  • Be available from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day while camp is in session. (This does not mean that the shift will be these hours every day.)
  • Current Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certification. (must be obtained prior to camp starting)
  • Successful completion of a background check and drug test.

General Responsibility
To plan, evaluate, and supervise the camp's pool and pond programs.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Set up pool and pond areas before the first day of camp.
  2. Prepare, lead, and document a staff aquatic skills review in both the pool and pond prior to camp beginning.
  3. Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
  4. Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety.
  5. Check equipment and make (or file for) repairs.
  6. Conduct daily check of equipment in area for safety, cleanliness and good repair.
  7. Evaluate aquatic abilities of campers.
  8. Write lesson plans that foster participants’ aquatic skills. Check and file the plans of other swim staff.
  9. Help all participants to progress from beginner to advanced levels.
  10. Award recognition and participation certificates to campers when earned. 
  11. Work with other staff members during special events.  (examples: weekly theme events, closing programs, campouts, option periods)
  12. Order equipment and supplies when needed (through camp office).
  13. Train, supervise, and assist other swim staff members.
  14. Monitor and modify behavior of all counselors with special regard to camper safety and program development around the pool and pond areas.
  15. Inform the directors of any camper and staff problems.
  16. Plan and carry out indoor lessons with swim groups on rainy days. 
  17. Evaluate current season and make suggestions for following season.
  18. These are not the only duties to be performed.  Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

General Responsibility
To monitor, modify, and evaluate all swim staff.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Supervise all aquatics staff.
  2. Be available to answer questions and handle problems.
  3. Train staff to make lesson plans to benefit campers.
  4. Meet with swim staff weekly and check the following:
    -written lesson plans
     -ongoing skill reviews with swim staff that include first aid, CPR, and rescue scenarios
    -awards and recognition of any earned swim levels

General Responsibility
To perform pool maintenance.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Make sure that all pools are vacuumed and maintained daily.
  2. Make sure chemicals are checked a minimum of 2-3 times daily, and document the salt, ph and chlorine levels.
  3. Buy supplies when needed.
  4. Take water samples at least every two weeks to Prism Pool on Northshore Drive for testing.
  5. Keep records of chemical levels and maintenance.

This job also entails

  • Weekly staff meetings (Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m.).
  • Attending all special camp events (staff events, picnics, fun nights, campouts, etc).
  • Attending pre-season training and orientation.
  • 40+ hours / week
  • Assisting with Discovery pick up between 4:00-6:00 p.m. or other areas that might be needed.
