Organic Chemist

POSITION DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Performs chemical and microbiological analysis of water utilizing EPA approved methods. Processes analytical data and prepares reports in compliance with local, state and federal laws regarding drinking water and surface water requirements.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*

POSITION SPECIFIC SUMMARY:

The Organic Chemist position in the City of Tucson’s Water Department performs chemical analysis and associated duties on drinking water, groundwater, reclaimed and surface water utilizing United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Standard Methods approved and licensed methodologies in the Water Quality Laboratory. Duties include analyzing samples, processing analytical data, and preparing reports in compliance with local, state and federal laws regarding drinking water, groundwater, and surface water requirements.

 

This position reports to the Chemist Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Analysis of water samples utilizing EPA methods 522, 524.2, 533, 8260B and Standard Method 5310C.

 

  • Sample preparation for analysis using Solid Phase Extraction with EPA 522 and EPA 533 methodologies.

 

  • Perform analytical measurements utilizing GC/MS, LC/MS/MS, TOC UV/Persulfate instrumentation.

 

  • Process data for initial calibrations, on-going calibration verification and sample data results utilizing Agilent MassHunter and Tekmar TekLink software.

 

  • Upload and review data to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

 

  • Prepare inorganic reagents and dilutions.

 

  • Prepare calibration and working standards for organic analysis using solvents such as Methanol and Dichloromethane.

 

  • Clean ionization sources for MS instrumentation.

 

  • Replace compressed gas tanks used as carrier gases in GC and TOC instrumentation.

 

  • Prepare and maintain instrumentation, analysis, standards and reagent logs. Prepare and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

 

  • Maintains a safe working environment for all staff.

 

  • Performs peer reviews for different analyses and findings in the organic/inorganic unit updates of peer review in LIMS.

 

  • Incorporates new initiatives into the Water Quality Laboratory strategies and practices to enhance efficiencies and procedures.

 

  • Perform all other duties and tasks as assigned. Assist with special projects and assignments as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICIATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's degree
Work Experience:
Two (2) years of directly related experience

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICIATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in chemical, biochemical, spectroscopy or related science fields.
Work Experience:
Experience performing analytical testing using GC/MS and LC/MS.
Experience or familiarity with EPA methods 524.2 and 8260B for VOC analysis, and EPA 522 and 533 for 1, 4-Dioxane and PFAS.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree/PhD
Experience with manual and/or automated Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) techniques.
Experience with Electron Impact ionization (EI) mass spectral interpretation.
Experience with Isotope Dilution quantitation technique.
Experience with Agilent MassHunter instrument software.
Experience with Promium Element Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

 

 

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Full Hourly Range: $26.57 - 45.84 USD
