OHSU Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program

OHSU's Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) is dedicated to reducing obstacles in graduate education. Our efforts involve creating safe and inclusive communities where postbaccalaureate scholars can celebrate their achievements, cultural identities, and enhance diversity within academic spaces.

The program supports and trains a diverse pool of recent college graduates to successfully transition into rigorous biomedical, research-focused doctoral degree programs (e.g., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D.). In addition to a year-long sustained research experience, OHSU PREP scholars will receive individualized competency-based professional and career skill development opportunities that allow for cultural immersion through interactions with near-peer mentors (i.e., graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) and OHSU faculty.

Individuals who identify as members from racial or ethnic groups that are historically excluded in STEM (Black/African American, Latino/Latine/Hispanic, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Native American), those with disabilities, or individuals who are socioeconomically disadvantaged are strongly encouraged to apply.

The program is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, Vollum Institute, and OHSU Research & Innovation.

Not only do we provide research experience and professional skill development, we also provide financial support in varying ways:

  • A competitive research assistant salary and health benefits (approx. $39k/year);
  • Relocation reimbursement;
  • Professional development funds to support graduate school application fees, professional society memberships, online courses, technology, registration and attendance to one national conference, etc.

Check us out and see if OHSU PREP is right for you. Additional information can be found on our website: www.ohsu.edu/prep

The application deadline is March 1st, 2025 with a program start date of July 1st, 2025.

Please do not hesitate to contact PREP at (PREPtograd@ohsu.edu) if you have any questions about our program or the application. Looking forward to seeing your application this March!

Eligibility requirements for OHSU PREP are as follows:

  • You must be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident.
  • You must have graduated or be in the process of graduating with a baccalaureate degree in a biomedically relevant science from an accredited college or university within the last three years before you apply (e.g., after March 1st, 2022 for the 2025 application cycle). (See FAQs for some exceptions)
  • At the start of the program (July 1), an individual cannot be enrolled in a degree program. Undergraduate students graduating in spring before the start of PREP are eligible to apply.
