Crime Scene Investigation Technician

The CSI Technician performs a variety of technical and specialized clerical duties essential to the operation of the Sheriff’s Office. Responsibilities include receiving, processing, storing, safeguarding, delivering, releasing, and disposing of evidentiary and non-evidentiary property and supplies. The technician ensures the integrity of evidence through the judicial process and maintains an inventory of all property submitted. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining the chain of custody for evidence. The CSI Technician works under the supervision of the Investigations Sergeant. May hire a Crime Scene Investigation Technician I, II, or III depending on submitted qualifications and experience. Summit County is an Equal Opportunity Employer. SALARY  

  • Crime Scene Investigation Technician I - $24.42- $34.18/hr. see below   
  • Crime Scene Investigation Technician II - $25.89 - $36.26/hr. see attached 
  • Crime Scene Investigation Technician III - $29.08 - $40.73/hr. see attached

QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Must be a United State Citizen. 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 
  • This is a civilian position. 
  • Must possess a valid Utah State driver's license. 
  • Must be able to work various days of the week. 
  • Must be able to work on-call 24 hours per day. 
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Ensures property and evidence booked into evidence is property packaged, sealed and initial/dated.
  • Conducts office and field work related to crime scene investigation. Responds to crime scenes as needed and under supervision collects, examines, photographs, and analyzes property and evidence. Packages, files, documents, reports, and reviews property and evidence, transports and stores property and evidence, paperwork and reports as required; provides courtroom testimony as required.
  • Maintains the preservation of evidence. Performs as the property custodian whom manages the operation of the evidence room and coordinates the disposition of property and evidence.
  • Receive, identify, classify, process, store, safeguard, oversee delivering of, release, and dispose of all types of evidentiary and non-evidentiary property.
  • Ensure incoming property has proper documentation and packaging.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of evidence and property storage and release procedures. Maintains inventory of items in property storage and does periodic cleaning and maintenance of those storage facilities.
  • Accurately tracks the movement of and maintain chain of custody documentation for all property and evidence.
  • Release property to approved personnel, and oversee the transport of property and evidence to labs for special testing, to court for hearings and trials, and/or storage; inspect, verify receipt of, and place property back in original or new location when returned.
  • Coordinate the release, destruction, and disposal of adjudicated, obsolete, and unclaimed property and evidence as authorized. Develop corresponding instructing property owners of the disposition of the property; release items to the right owner; pull evidence to be destroyed, auctioned; dispose of narcotics in manner directed; prepare associated reports.
  • Maintains and audits accurate records and logs of all property and evidence; maintain manual and computerized record control systems and/or data bases; operate a computer to access, enter and retrieve a variety of information; print and deliver reports. Works with prosecutors to maintain state laws of evidence.
  • Apply and explain pertinent laws, rules, regulations, protocols, and policies related to property and evidence. Interprets the scientific data gathered and prepares meaningful reports in a manner to be presented to a judge and jury in a court of law.
  • Monitors evidence storage areas utilizing established security standards; ensures proper temperatures are maintained for sensitive items.
  • Provides training and assistance to Sheriff’s Office staff on proper packaging and handling of impounded property.
  • Must be a credible witness in a court of law.
  • Performs related duties as required.
