JOB DESCRIPTION: OMD PEER MENTOR

Department: Office of Multicultural Development

Location: Simmons Hall 124

Stipend: Up to $3,120.00/year (Fall 2025 and Spring 2026)

• Serve as a positive role model.

• Demonstrate patience and a willingness to support others' growth.

• Exhibit a strong work ethic, both independently and as part of a team.

• Possess strong academic performance, study skills, interpersonal communication, and time management abilities.

• Build meaningful connections with first-year students from various backgrounds.

• Have knowledge of The University of Akron and its campus resources.

• Show technical proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, and basic computer software).

 

Responsibilities:

• Build one-on-one relationships with incoming first-year students from various backgrounds.

• Communicate weekly with mentees to monitor their progress.

• Set goals with mentees and track their progress toward achieving those goals each semester.

• Assist in organizing academic and social events for mentees throughout the academic year.

• Maintain weekly documentation logs to track student progress.

• Represent and promote the program and the Office of Multicultural Development at campus events and activities as needed.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

• Open to undergraduate students in all majors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.

• Preference will be given to students who have completed at least two semesters at The University of Akron and demonstrate strong academic and/or leadership skills.

• Basic computer skills are required, including proficiency in word processing and spreadsheets (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms).

 

Additional Information:

• Peer Mentors are required to complete up to eight office hours per week during Fall 2025 (120 total hours) and Spring 2026 (120 total hours).

• Attendance at a mandatory two-day summer training (August 7th and 8th, 2025) is required, along with participation in staff meetings throughout the academic year.

• Peer Mentors are not compensated through the Federal Work-Study program.

• Selected students must be enrolled full-time during the academic year of their appointment as Peer Mentors with the Office of Multicultural Development.
