The intern will work closely with OGC’s leadership team (specifically Nancy Lippa, Deputy General Counsel and Privacy Officer; Ashley Collier, Deputy General Counsel for Litigation; David Lacy, Senior Assistant General Counsel) to gain hands-on experience in legal writing, research, and analysis; preparing and evaluating legal documents; and providing legal assistance to attorneys in areas including contracts, litigation, investments, tax, employee benefits, and administrative law. The internship aims to provide exposure to the day-to-day operations of the Office of the General Counsel and contribute to the overall goals of the Employees Retirement System of Texas.

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Intern to join our team for the ERS Summer Internship Program. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with our attorneys on a range of projects and tasks, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field. 

Internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  1. Conducts legal research and gathers data to support decision-making processes
  2. Prepares and edits legal documents.
  3. Reviews and analyzes legal documents and records.
  4. Assists attorneys in preparing cases for litigation. 
  5. Reviews cases for jurisdictional deficiencies and procedural compliance. 
  6. Collaborates with team members to achieve project goals and deadlines.
  7. Prepares reports, presentations, and documentation as required.
  8. Participates in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and training opportunities.
  9. Performs administrative tasks as needed to support departmental operations.
  10. Adapts and learns new skills as required to meet project demands.
  11. Seeks opportunities for process improvement and efficiency within the department.
  12. Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Enrolled in an accredited law school or graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.  First year of law school must be complete before internship begins. 

Other Information:  ERS operates in a hybrid work environment meaning shifts will predominately be onsite at ERS building, but may include a few days working a hybrid schedule. This position may require access to privileged, confidential, or sensitive data.  ERS will conduct either a TXDPS or FBI criminal history check on all selected intern candidates.  For more information about this policy inquiries can be made to employment@ers.texas.gov.
