Position Summary

The South Euclid Police Department is seeking a qualified candidate for Animal Warden. This position will report directly to the office of the Chief of Police. The successful candidate will possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Specifically, this position is responsible for investigating complaints regarding stray, dangerous, or nuisance animals. Capture animals, collect evidence, write reports, prepare affidavits and recommend charges for violations of city or state code relating to animals.  An employee in this position will also be responsible for feeding and caring for animals housed in the South Euclid Kennel and ensuring that the kennel remains clean and disinfected to ensure the health of animals housed inside.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Investigates complaints from the public and other agencies regarding nuisance, stray, uncontrolled, dangerous or diseased animals.
  • Conducts investigations of complaints regarding animal cruelty and neglect; investigates animal bites, arranging for appropriate identification and quarantine.
  • Provide education and resources on local laws, codes and ordinances relating to the care and control of animals and filing of complaints.
  • Responsible for cleaning and routine maintenance of kennel. 
  • Captures stray and unlicensed animals for impounding, removes dead animals from public and private property, transports injured animals and provides for their care.
  • Testify in court regarding citations and disposition of complaints.
  • Maintains records and prepares daily reports related to work performed.
  • Operates humane traps, mobile radios, cellular phones, and related animal control tools and equipment.
  • Often exposed to hazardous situations where they might be bitten by animals.
  • Represents the City with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  • Performs additional duties as needed

 

Position Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of experience with animals in a shelter or animal control setting preferred but not required. A combination of education, training and experience with animals will be taken into consideration
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • National Animal Control Association (NACA) certificate preferred but not required. Must be willing and capable of completing the NACA Animal Control Officer (ACO) 1 and 2 courses and passing the certification exam. 
  • Candidate must be able to pass a background investigation to include a Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fingerprint check, Computer Voice Stress Analysis examination, personality assessment, and drug screening.

 

Compensation

  • $16.00-$34.10 per hour; 40 hours per week; 80 hours per pay period. Exact pay rate is dependent upon qualifications and experience. 
  • Paid vacation and sick leave allocated according to the City of South Euclid’s salary ordinance.
  • Paid holidays include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
