Job Summary:

This recruitment will be used to fill five full-time, seasonal (March – July) Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 positions for the Fisheries, Wildlife, & Conservation Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU ).

This position will be located in Medford, Oregon.

FWCS is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff, including academic faculty, research assistants, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. Over $8 million of externally funded grants and contracts are received each year in support of science focused on basic ecological research, conservation, and sustainable use of fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Department is the largest in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with over 1000 students in 8 degree and certificate programs, including one Bachelor of Science degree, five graduate degrees, and two graduate certificates. We are a vibrant department that promotes a supportive “family” atmosphere for all students and employees.

Biological Science Research Technicians are required to conduct surveys for northern spotted owls to obtain occupancy and reproductive data as part of a short-term monitoring program. Additional work past the primary sampling period (March-mid July) may include the deployment of ARU’s or post-field season data management (September 1-October 31).

Key Responsibilities

85% Field Research

• Conduct surveys for Northern Spotted Owls by confirming owl presence, reproductive status, and identity using auditory detections and visual observation of color bands following well-established survey protocol; care for laboratory mice used to determine spotted owl reproductive status;
• Maintain accurate field notes
• Care for and maintain field equipment and state-owned rental vehicles
• Enter data in the field using the FieldMaps app on handheld tablets;
• Work with online vegetation maps and aerial photographs;
• Describe vegetation characteristics, floristics, and physiography of owl roost and nest locations in project area;
• Collect owl pellets to determine food habits;
• Deploy, maintain, and collect ARU’s from field locations;
• Work closely with personnel of the U.S. Forest Service, BLM , U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Oregon Dept. of Forestry, private landowners and other agencies
• other duties as assigned.

15% Office Work

• completion of in-person and on-line safety and animal handler training as assigned
• use of desktop or laptop computers, tablets, and smart phones, to enter data, map owl locations, maintain field notes, coordinate work with crewmates and supervisor.
• Work collaboratively and inclusively with teammates.

What You Will Need

Two years of college-level courses in wildlife science or related field; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Previous field experience in remote or isolated environments with challenging terrain. 
Demonstrated orienteering skills including the use of maps, compass, and handheld GPS units. 
Commitment to working professionally and inclusively with people from all backgrounds. 
Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle. 
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have

Field experience conducting occupancy or demographic surveys for spotted owls 
Experience deploying, maintaining, and retrieving Automated Recording Unit’s. 
Experience processing ARU acoustic data.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This job requires driving state-owned rental vehicles on primitive forest roads and navigating difficult terrain on foot to access survey sites and locate owls during both daytime and nighttime surveys, and conduct vegetation sampling during daytime hours. Employees must have good night and color vision and average or above hearing. The employee works independently and must be able to follow an established protocol in the field.

The employee also must frequently work alone in remote forest areas and navigate over mountainous terrain. Orienteering skills, including the use of maps, compass, handheld GPS units and tablets are essential to the collection of data in the field. The work is physically strenuous and involves working and hiking in rain, snow, heat, and on steep, brushy slopes while carrying a backpack with supplies weighing up to 25lbs. The employee should be comfortable performing these duties at night, well after dark, as required. This is a full-time position, so although schedules vary with changing workloads and priorities, employees will follow an approved safety plan where team members are required to work the same four, 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday totaling 40 hours each week.

All the above duties must be performed with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. The employee must work as a team member and may be required to live and work in close quarters and in isolated settings for extended periods of time.
