NABat and Endangered Species - Survey Technician Temporary - Hourly Fort McCoy, Wisconsin

POSITION
The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Colorado State University (CSU) is hiring one seasonal technician to conduct threatened and endangered species surveys on Fort McCoy Military Installation, Wisconsin. The technician will be responsible for independently conducting NABat acoustic monitoring efforts via driving nocturnal surveys and stationary recorders. This position also completes surveys and telemetry searches for state and federally listed species, including species of turtles, snakes, and Lepidoptera (Regal Fritillary Butterfly, Phlox Moth). Surveys occur at Fort McCoy Military Installation, Wisconsin from approximately mid- May to end of August 2025. Position could be extended up to nine months depending upon management needs, funding and availability.

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. LOCATION
Fort McCoy is a United States Military Installation on 60,000 acres between Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin in Monroe County. Located about 30 miles east of La Crosse, Wisconsin, this region contains a mix of rolling hardwood ridges, oak/jack pine savannas, and prairies. This ecological region, known as the Driftless Area, contains numerous rare species of both plants and animals and is truly a unique habitat.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Independently conduct driving nocturnal acoustic bat surveys following NABat procedure using Echo Meter Touch 2©.
• Collect passive acoustic data following NABat procedure using Song Meter Mini Bat© ultrasonic recorders.
• Locate, using radio-telemetry equipment, capture, and handle endangered turtle and snake species.
• Survey for Lepidoptera, including identifying rare insects, butterflies and larvae.
• Use Kaleidoscope Pro© acoustic analysis software, Microsoft Excel©, and Microsoft Word© to enter and analyze data.
• Use ArcGIS software such as Survey123©, Field Maps©, and Quick Capture© to collect data using a tablet.

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS
Applicant must be able to work alone and work frequent nocturnal hours. Successful candidates must be able to walk over uneven terrain on a regular basis and work in inclement weather, with biting insects and around poisonous plants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have or be currently pursuing a degree in a wildlife-related field. Successful candidates must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. Valid driver’s license and ability to drive at night. Knowledge of central Wisconsin fauna or fauna identification skills. Ability to navigate using topographical map/GIS map navigation. Candidate must be able to independently navigate vehicle survey routes at night on a weekly basis. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Ability to work well alone and within a crew setting is extremely important.

WORK HOURS
Applicants should expect to work up to 40 hrs/week Monday-Friday. Expect evening mobile monitoring surveys by vehicle. The possibility exists for weekend work.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
• Comfortable working alone during night hours and with highly variable daily schedules and tasks.
• Experience conducting acoustic bat surveys following NABat procedure.
• Familiar with Wildlife Acoustics© products including Song Meter Mini Bat© and Echo Meter Touch 2© acoustic recorders, and Kaleidoscope Pro© acoustic analysis software.
• Threatened and endangered species survey experience, including Lepidoptera identification skills.
• Ability to capture and handle rare wildlife species including turtle and non-venomous snake species.
• Experience driving off road with 4WD in sand and mud.
• Familiarity with using ArcGIS software such as Survey123©, Field Maps©, and Quick Capture© to collect data.
• Data recording and entry experience with Microsoft Excel© and Microsoft Word©.
