Graphic Design Intern

Hello,

G&S Sporting Goods is seeking a motivated and entrepreneurial student to assist us with graphic design work for the revival and growth of an 85-year-old boxing equipment and apparel brand. G&S has been in continual operation since 1937 (although it has been a small-scale operation in recent years) and has deep roots in New York’s gritty Lower East Side. Until a partner and I acquired it, the company was owned and operated by two generations of the founding family.  In many ways, G&S feels like a bootstrapped startup now, despite its rich eight-decade history. In its heyday, boxing legends from Sugar Ray Robinson to Muhammad Ali visited the iconic Lower East Side store and wore our gear.

Fast-forward to today: The boxing and kickboxing for fitness space has experienced tremendous growth, led by a white-collar, six-figure-income demographic, and is equally popular among men and women.  Despite strong competition in the equipment space, there is no established ‘lifestyle’ brand for these athletes.  We aim to become that brand.  The original store has closed, and we’ve moved operations entirely online. We’re in the early stages of transforming G&S into a digital-first brand, with plans to potentially open physical locations in the future.

We’re in the early days of the revival, but the response to the brand has been very positive and we’ve shipped product to all four corners of the U.S. We’re now looking for someone to help us with graphic design work.  This is a fun and rewarding project for someone interested in entrepreneurship, sports, marketing and creative strategy.

This internship could be done for credit – we are happy to coordinate with your school to arrange that.

Hours and timing are very flexible, but we are seeking someone who is committed to putting in a serious effort – this is not just an academic consulting project like some internships. We're looking for individuals who are creative and able to generate ideas, but who are also ready to roll up their sleeves and help us grow the brand.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Assist in creating on-brand graphics for social media, website, and marketing materials, reflecting the gritty, vintage aesthetic of G&S Sporting Goods
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to help develop creative content for digital and print platforms
  • Stay updated on design trends and competitor strategies to bring fresh, innovative ideas to projects
  • Support ad-hoc design needs while maintaining organized digital files and adhering to brand guidelines

Thanks for taking a look.
