Plant Controller

 

Join a dynamic team at Superior Dairy, a historic organization with a mission of supporting farmers for over 100 years. Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Plant Controller is responsible for overseeing the accounting Superior Dairy plant in Canton, Ohio, for ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and effective internal controls. This role plays a crucial part in supporting the financial strategy and operational efficiency of the organization. The Plant Controller will lead the accounting team and collaborate with other departments to provide financial insights and maintain the integrity of financial data.  This position requires a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.

The Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) – established in 1916 – is a dairy farmer-owned and operated milk marketing cooperative and dairy processor. As the 10th largest dairy cooperative in the U.S., MMPA serves dairy farmers throughout Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana, employing approximately 625 people in four states. In addition to a cheese plant in Indiana called the Middlebury Cheese Company, and a dairy product plant in Ohio called Superior Dairy, MMPA operates two SQF Level 3 dairy ingredient plants in Michigan. Products made at MMPA’s plants include fluid milk, cheese, ultra-filtered milk, ice cream, butter, nonfat dry milk, cream, and condensed skim milk.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare and present monthly financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other regulatory requirements.
  • Provide commentary and analysis on the results.  Aid in the development and enhancement of month end and quarterly summary decks, budget and forecast decks to “tell the story” of the performance of the plant.

  Accounting Operations:

  • Maintain and enhance the company’s accounting systems and processes.
  • Manage the monthly close process and ensure timely completion.
  • Support cost accounting team in product cost analyses.

 Internal Controls:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy of financial data.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
  • Identify areas for process improvement and implement necessary changes.
  • Ensure inter-company transactions are up to date and accurate.

 Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts for the plant.
  • Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis.

 Audit and Compliance:

  • Internal and external audits
  • Ensure compliance with tax and regulatory filings.

Team Leadership:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to team members.
  • Oversee the recruitment and training of new accounting staff.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Senior Corporate Controller and other functional management to support strategic financial initiatives.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business decisions.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory role, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Leadership Skills Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • ERP experience, Microsoft AX or D365 preferred
  • Experience in accounting software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve accounting problems
  • Possess a strong attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills which includes the ability to effectively communicate with employees, vendors, and customers
  • Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook

 

Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel as required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
