The Norfolk Police Department is excited to announce an opportunity to join our team as an Accountant I. We are seeking highly motivated candidates who are eager to contribute to our team within the Bureau of Public Safety Financial Management.

This position plays a critical role in monitoring and maintaining transactions within the city financial system.

Essential Functions:

 

***The departmental hiring rate for this position is $46,589.00 - $53,577.00 annually***

 


Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Serves as primary contact for Fire-Rescue's accounts payable function.
  • Processes purchase requests from divisions within department.
  • Monitors accounts and performs financial transactions in City's financial system.
  • Works closely with vendors addressing billing concerns, seeking additional information, and following-up on pending orders.
  • Maintains accounts payable pending file to review outstanding payables and encumbrances,
  • Maintains the fixed asset inventory by completing required forms related to the acquisition, disposition or transfer of equipment and coordinating inventory with departmental divisions and other city departments 
  • Aids internal and external customers regarding accounts payable status.
  • Monitors contractual expenses and works closely with department's Fiscal Monitoring Specialist on contract modifications/additions.
  • Assists with payroll duties for Fire-Rescue such as, performing payroll verifications, preparing payroll adjustment forms, performing payroll audits, etc.
  • Maintains files.
  • Performs other duties as necessary and assists with special projects.

Education/Experience:

 

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Six months as a staff accountant.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.


Signing Bonus:

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.  The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period and/or recruit academy.  To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
