Summer Tax Intern

The overall purpose of the Summer Tax Intern position is to support the IEEE Tax Management team in maintaining good standing with US and global taxing jurisdictions as it pertains to IEEE’s operations.
Primary responsibilities of the Summer Tax Intern include:
· Tax reporting and compliance - non-profit, income tax, sales and use, international
· Basic tax research
· Interface with volunteers and staff
The Summer Tax Intern will also take part in IEEE’s formal summer intern training program, with additional opportunity for education and mentorship. The intern will greatly increase their network and knowledge of potential career paths by the conclusion of the internship. Opportunities for professional growth and impact are practically limitless for a highly motivated intern.
The position will work with other IEEE departments within Finance & Administration, as well as other business areas as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Specific duties may include but are not limited to:
· Tax Compliance
o Accurate preparation and timely filing of assigned tax returns:
§ Forms 990, 990-T, 990-PF and related state charitable and income tax returns
§ Federal, state, and local income tax returns
§ Indirect tax returns (SUT, VAT, GST, JCT, etc.)
§ Other required statutory reporting
· Problem Solving
o Review and resolve issues that arise with the enterprise transaction tax system or government taxing jurisdiction and coordinate duties for the tax engine
o Assist with indirect tax coordination for IEEE’s global conference business
o Respond accurately and timely to inquiries from internal and external customers
Qualifications - External
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
· Working towards a bachelor's or master’s degree in accounting, tax, finance, or economics
· Past internship experience in an accounting firm or tax department desirable
Skills and Requirements
· Effective interpersonal skills
· Ability to analyze compliance requirements, and identify problems and recommend potential solutions, with moderate supervision
· Must demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism when dealing with sensitive and/or confidential matters
· Ability to communicate both verbally and written with respect to assigned work
· High level of initiative and motivation
· Technologically savvy and proficient in Google and Microsoft Office suite products; experience with tax software (direct and indirect tax applications) a plus
· Ability to work with moderate supervision and manage multiple tasks
· Ability to build relationships and constructively interact with the team, internal IEEE departments and volunteers
