Student Research Intern
Student Research Intern
REEgen Inc.
Part-Time, Spring Semester – 12 Weeks, with opportunity to continue and potential for full-time position
Overview:
REEgen is a startup based out of the Praxis Center at Cornell University. We use synthetic biology to engineer microbes for sustainable production of rare earth elements (REE). REE are needed for manufacturing many of today’s electronics, such as mobile phones and computers, but they’re also essential for renewable energy infrastructure, including EV motors and windmill turbines. Unfortunately, current methods for producing REE generate disproportionate amounts of hazardous waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
At REEgen, we’re developing a clean, biological system for extraction, recovery, and purification of REE from a variety of sources, including waste and end-of-life materials. With synthetic biology, we are maximizing the efficiency of microbial processes that will replace the most damaging steps in REE production. Our vision is to secure the future of sustainable energy through the implementation of efficient and green technologies for REE recovery and production.
Required skills, experience, major, etc.:
- Strong interest in research related to biological engineering and sustainable energy.
- Basic knowledge of biology and chemistry.
- Some lab and research experience helpful.
- Ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented and able to stay focused on repetitive tasks.
- Training will be provided.
Description of position:
We are seeking an assistant to help our research efforts in furthering genetic improvements and process enhancements in our bio-extraction system.
The student intern will:
- Assist lab personnel with their research projects by executing basic supporting tasks under supervision.
- Conduct routine lab tasks, including dish washing, autoclaving glass/plasticware, making solutions and media, and general lab cleanup.
- Data entry and responsible data management is also expected.
Hours are flexible.
