Assistant City Attorney II

SUMMARY

This position is part of the City Attorney’s Office and responsible for providing comprehensive legal services and representation to the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and City Departments, specifically on matters involving the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), the City of Charlotte’s public transit department. The position is physically located at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center. The job title and classification will ultimately be determined by the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 
Review, prepare and draft legal documents, such as legal memorandums, resolutions, contracts, lease and license agreements.
Negotiate agreements and settlements.
Conduct legal research and render legal opinions.
Provide legal advice and counsel on complex legal matters.

Represent the City at all levels of federal and state courts as required.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of constitutional, federal, state, and local laws affecting municipal government.
Possess business acumen with ability to negotiate transactions effectively.
Ability to master new material quickly, manage diverse legal portfolio and handle fast-paced environment.
Ability to think creatively to solve problems.
Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
 Knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
 Knowledge of established precedents and source of legal reference applicable to City activities.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, federal and transit officials, and elected and appointed officials.

Prior experience handling transactional matters is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school.
License to practice law in North Carolina or ability to be admitted into the NC State Bar via reciprocity prior to beginning employment.

 Minimum of (5) years of relevant work experience as a practicing attorney for Assistant City Attorney II.
