GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Mission Bay Aquatic Center Instructional Coordinator, the MBAC Instructional Supervisor is responsible for supervision of instructional programming with a focus on either wakesports and surfing or sailing instructional programs. Duties include hiring, training, staff scheduling, assisting with instructional curriculum and materials development, assisting in promotional and marketing efforts, and ensuring safety and instructional quality of classes, camps, and events. This position must provide excellent customer service, supervise programming, and complete administrative tasks. All MBAC full-time staff also serve as “duty” persons that manage and supervise the facility and all programs at scheduled times.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises instructional programming across all MBAC programs with a focus on either wakesports and surfing or sailing activities, depending on the candidate's experience.
- Develops curriculum and oversees implementation of MBAC watersports instructional programming with participant safety as the highest priority.
- Schedules qualified staff and supervises rental operations, university credit classes, recreation classes, private lessons, youth camp instruction, and instructional events.
- Supervises all daily operational functions of MBAC when assigned as “duty person” including but not limited to ensuring safety, providing excellent customer service, handling and reporting customer and employee injuries, opening and closing the facility, and performing other operational functions as needed.
- Coordinates the recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of instructors and program assistants.
- Assists in working with the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at SDSU and Education Recreation department at USD to conduct credit class offerings including class schedules, curriculums, accurate and timely grading, and other administration.
- Evaluates equipment and program improvements and innovations to enhance operations for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Assists Instructional Coordinators with supervision and operations when they are not present or available.
- Communicates equipment and facility issues and changes as they arise.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Strategic Planning
- Ensures the development, planning, coordination, and management of new program opportunities.
- Ensures that programs are inclusive and conducted in accordance with approved rules and regulations that address participant safety as the top priority.
- Ensures that instructional classes provide learning opportunities, knowledge, and skills through well-developed curriculum and quality instruction.
- Ensures that rental operations provide fun participant experiences that focus on safety and skill education including proper use and care of equipment.
- Provides detailed written class materials for staff reference.
- Supervises classes and instructors with assessments that include constructive feedback.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of programs and classes using participant feedback and evaluations.
- Assists in the development of program or operational additions or alternatives for revenue growth.
- Implements risk management/safety plan, including regular review of injury and accident reports.
Minimum Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Four year degree from an accredited college or university preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
- Minimum three years of demonstrated experience in watersport instruction, supervision, and program management.
- Must have excellent technical skills (or excellent understanding of) in wakesports and surfing or sailing.
- Broad knowledge of watersports in the marine aquatic environment preferred.
- Minimum four years of experience in boat handling and operation of powerboats.
- Excellent boat trailering skills.
- Demonstrated experience serving a diverse population of customers.
- Experience working in a university environment preferred.
- Experience with the needs and requirements of patrons with disabilities and experience with ADA guidelines preferred.
License & Certification Requirements
- Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding certification.
- Must attain Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification within 6 months of employment.
- California Boater Card.
- Valid Driver License.
- Must attain a US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential within 6 months of employment.
- US Sailing Level 1 Instructor preferred.

- Well organized with the ability to effectively multi-task, prioritize work, problem solve, make decisions, and meet scheduled deadlines under pressure.
- Must be self-motivated and perform with minimal direction and supervision.

COMPENSATION
Starting range: $23.96 - to $26.44 per hour
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a full-time position scheduled to work an alternating weekly schedule of Tuesday through Saturday and Monday through Friday. Flexibility and a willingness to work long and irregular hours and days, including early mornings, evenings, and some weekends are required.

Work conditions occur indoors and outdoors, therefore requiring exposure to a variety of elements. The work environment will involve exposure to water, salt water, dust, grease, sand, sun, wind, rain, weather, seaweed, sea grass, hazardous chemicals, and other industrial hazards.
This position requires occasional business-related driving. A valid California Driver License and proof of automobile insurance is required.

EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt, Grade 4
