Overview:
Save the Harbor is a dynamic and successful nonprofit Boston Harbor advocacy organization made up of thousands of people from across the region. Save the Harbor led the effort to create the Boston Harbor Islands National Park and transformed South Boston’s beaches into the cleanest urban beaches in the United States. None of this would be possible without dedicated community members, partners, full- and part-time staff.
Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator to support and enhance ongoing programming, assist in the development of new programming, and work at the community level to connect our community members to resources and opportunities related to Boston Harbor, our region's beaches, and the Boston Harbor Islands.
This position is for a community driven, detail oriented, and passionate individual with an interest in community engagement and equitable programming. Under the direction of the Director of Partnerships & Program Development, the Community Engagement Coordinator will support the daily community administrative tasks and engagement of Save the Harbor’s Programs.
Responsibilities & Skills:
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Coordinate the organization and growth of our outreach work to build our network for Save the Harbor’s programs
- Support communication and drive continued engagement with our beaches program partners both virtually and in person
- Aid in coordinating various Save the Harbor events, including the Shamrock Splash and Beats on the Beach Block Party – monitoring partner communication, acquiring vendors, obtaining any necessary permits
- Aid in organizing, reviewing, and tracking Better Beaches grant program applications from the request for proposal through the decision notification process
- Build relationships with community members and organizations to include community voices in program development through our Pop-Up community engagement series and tabling
- Recruit participants for various summer programs using intentional outreach strategies
- Monitor communications and respond to inquiries regarding programs from partner organizations
- Collaborate with the Program Coordinator to ensure Save the Harbor youth and full time staff presence and activities at key Better Beaches Events
- Support the Beats on the Beach program’s administrative team by assisting with the planning, development, and execution of programs and events that connect artists to each other and the waterfront
- Represent Save the Harbor at community events and opportunities hosted by Save the Harbor and our partners
- Support the continual assessment of Save the Harbor’s programs and community engagement tactics with the core values of equity and access in mind
- Aid in developing pilot programs by recruiting partners and participants
- Collaborate closely with the Director of Partnerships & Program Development through active participation in program ideation and execution
Skills & Knowledge Desired:
- Excellent interpersonal, writing and verbal skills with the ability to accurately and enthusiastically communicate Save the Harbor’s work and mission
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for networking and building relationships, with a strong drive to engage with people, foster connections, and thrive in social and community-oriented settings
- Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, set goals, and develop systems for achieving those goals
- Taking initiative to conduct thorough, thoughtful, and organized research to build effective outreach databases
- Experience with working with Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive including searching for and organizing files, building efficient Google Sheets and Excel, and working collaboratively in Google Sheets
- Knowledge of or lived experience in Boston’s neighborhoods, schools, and local organizations
- Ability to break a task down into elements, think critically about each element, analyze the information you have/need, and use that information to form an effective plan
- Experience cultivating relationships across diverse communities and communicating with folks who come from varying backgrounds
- Comfort and confidence presenting in public, speaking with large crowds, tabling at events, and doing in person outreach
- A continual interest in learning, willingness to find resources to support professional growth, and utilization of resources to develop additional skills
- A valid MA drivers license and/or access to reliable transportation are preferred
- Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin and/or Cape Verdean Creole preferred, but not required
Terms
- Target Start Date: January 13th, 2024
- Hours: 40 hours per week
- Occasional night and weekend event attendance is required (more frequent in the summer months - extra time will be flexed).
- Hybrid: every Thursday in the office, optional Tuesdays in office, based on discussions between you and your manager (October through May), with up to 5 days a week in person during the summer (June through September), typically not in office but at outdoor events, Save the Harbor programs, etc.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range for this position is $50,000-$55,000/year based on experience and qualifications, plus benefits including 100% health and dental insurance; vacation, personal, holiday and sick time; 401K retirement plan with 3% match beginning after 6 months
