Who we are:
The Technician Internship Program is geared toward current college students who have an interest in Consumers Energy and the energy industry. The Technician Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles of skill development, ability enhancement, and knowledge application – experience designed to be complementary to traditional classroom instruction.
We are looking for:
Current college students of all levels will work as part of a larger team to provide hands-on support and/or design & development for various technical aspects of our business. This could include work in energy delivery – electric engineering, energy delivery – gas engineering, energy operations, and more – all while helping create a better tomorrow for the communities we serve!
In addition to working alongside full time employees carrying out the technician function for Consumers Energy, Technician Interns will have the option to participate in several additional optional events within the program. This includes intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked philanthropic event, the Intern Challenge.
Technician Intern assignments may include opportunities in:
- Electric GIS Operations
- Electric Distribution Design Team
- Gas Metering and Regulation Engineering Team
- Gas Distribution Pipeline Engineering Team
- Gas Transmission Pipeline Engineering Team
- Electric Field Laboratory
- Land Services Survey
What you may do:
- Consult with supervisors, operators, and engineers to review assigned area needs Discuss problems, prioritize work, and provide technical expertise.
- Review, edit, develop, manage, and interpret documents and drawings utilized for the purposes of maintaining, constructing, testing, and removing facilities from the Company’s gas and electric systems.
- Assist with technical projects as a technician to include design support, creation of engineering drawings, inspections, system planning, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, easements, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation.
- Provide technical services with accuracy, integrating all applicable governmental and company laws, standards, and procedures on time and under budget.
- Use computer-assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
- Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects.
- Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately.
- Assists in client contact and communication.
- Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide technical expertise to coworkers, clients, customers, government entities and the public.
- Provide all technical services in a legal and ethical manner.
- Reviews operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents.

We encourage you to apply if you possess the following:
Required
- Actively enrolled and pursuing a 2-year Associates Degree in a science or technical field, working toward completion of 48 scientific or technical semester credit hours, or Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum GPA requirement of 2.7 or higher
- A valid driver’s license
The following skills and experiences may set you apart:
- Hands-on experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) Experience with CAD systems
- Knowledge of MS Outlook is ideal
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to new assignments and projects Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills are critical
- Must possess the attitude and aptitude to learn new skills and concepts
- Ability and willingness to work independently or as part of a team in order to complete tasks Prior work and/or internship experience is a plus
This role requires reporting to an assigned headquarters. Leaders will discuss the work arrangements which best fit the nature of the work along with overall business needs.
