Duties

This position is located at North Cascades National Park Service Complex and is duty stationed in Marblemount, Washington. Marblemount, Washington is located on State Route 20 (North Cascades Scenic Highway), approximately 45 miles east of Interstate 5. Marblemount has about 350 residents and boasts a small grocery store, gas stations, churches, community center, a post office and a number of small restaurants. Recreation in the park and Marblemount area focuses on outdoor activities including hiking, mountaineering, fishing and boating. About 18 miles down valley, the larger town of Concrete provides a larger grocery store, medical office, and specialty stores such as those selling hardware goods. Many people shop in the larger towns of Burlington, Sedro-Woolley and Mount Vernon, about an hour drive away. The weather in the summer is relatively dry with high temperatures in the 80's, with some warmer periods in the high 90's. Nighttime temps are in the 50's. Annual average precipitation is 84 inches. It can snow at any time of year in the high country. Closest metropolitan area is Seattle, Washington (100 miles).

This position is located in the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection and serves as a Law Enforcement Shift Supervisor at North Cascades National Park Service Complex. The incumbent assists the Deputy Chief Ranger in the overall management and leadership of the park's law enforcement and emergency services program and operations in all three units of the complex.

The position is responsible for the supervision of up to three permanent, permanent subject to furlough, seasonal and volunteer staff in a multi-faceted resource and visitor protection program. The incumbent provides leadership, program direction and expert advice on a wide variety of issues including; law enforcement, resource and visitor protection, Wilderness, EMS, aviation, SAR, boating, climbing, safety, backcountry operations, dispatch and emergency response.

The duties include:

  • supervision and performance of law enforcement duties including detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • overall direction and supervision of area operations including natural & cultural resource protection, law enforcement, search & rescue prevention and response, emergency medical, and winter operations.
  • providing first-level, day-to-day supervision to a staff of active permanent and seasonal rangers who are engaged in a diverse, complex, and active field-based protection ranger operation.
