The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners of the City of Morris, Illinois is accepting applications for the position of police officer with the Morris Police Department.

Starting Salary (5/1/2025): $79,827
(Over 1 yr. $84,184, Over 2 yrs. $90,568, Over 4 yrs. $93,297, Over 6 yrs. $96,109, and Over 8 yrs. $105,021)

NOTE: Candidates hired by the City of Morris after they have completed at least 3 years of full-time experience as a police officer in another jurisdiction, having been so employed within the last 2 years of hire date as a full-time sworn law enforcement officer will advance to the "Over 2 yrs." step of the wage scale after the successful completion of Field Training, or 90 days, whichever is longer.

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the City of Morris Board of Fire & Police Commissioners:

  • U.S. citizenship (and/or alien admitted for permanent residence or lawfully admitted for temporary residence and who produces evidence of intention to become a citizen of the United States);
  • No felony convictions (or any misdemeanor conviction involving moral turpitude). Applicants are not obligated to disclose expunged juvenile records of adjudication or arrest.;
  • Valid driver's license;
  • Must be at least 20 years, 6 months of age and under the age of 35 at the time of application (and under 35 at the time the final eligibility list is posted) unless otherwise exempt by State Statute (Illinois Compiled Statutes 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6);
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Must present a valid Illinois POWER Test card within 4 weeks of their date of hire; POWER Test cards may be issued through either NIPSTA, Triton Community College, or Joliet Junior College;
  • Residency: Must reside within 20 miles of the Morris Police Department (200 E. Chapin St. Morris, IL 60450) within 18 months from the date of hire; 
  • Application Deadline: Monday, February 3, 2025 @ 4:00 PM (CST) -OR- once 150 applications have been submitted, whichever occurs first.
  • Attend a Mandatory Orientation and Written Test on Saturday, February 15, 2025. 

 

Required documents (copies to be submitted at time of application):

  • Valid driver’s license;
  • Social Security card;
  • Birth certificate;
  • High school diploma or GED certificate;
  • College degree -OR- transcripts, if applicable;
  • State law enforcement officer certification, if applicable;
  • If applicant has military service, a copy of his/her Military Service Record Form DD-214 and Discharge Papers.
  • NOTE:  Incomplete or defective applications will NOT be accepted and will disqualify the applicant. 

DATES TO REMEMBER:

  1. Submit Application: Applicants must complete and submit all application materials by Monday, February 3, 2025 @ 4:00 PM (CST) -OR- ONCE 150 SUBMITTED APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST. Faxed, e-mailed, mailed or dropped off applications will NOT be accepted. Applications submitted after the deadline will NOT be accepted. Only one application per person, per testing cycle will be accepted.  

     
  2. An optional Police Officer Candidate Open House will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 from 6:00pm - 8:00 pm at the Morris Police Department.  While this is not mandatory, it will give candidates an opportunity to tour our facilities and meet some of the staff. 
     
  3. Mandatory Orientation and Written Examination Following completion of all application materials and review of minimum qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to attend the Orientation & Written Exam Administration*:

When:  Saturday, February 15, 2025

Time to be determined based on number of eligible applicants participating.

You will be notified of your test time.  It will either be 8:00 am or noon.

Where: Morris Police Department (200 E. Chapin St., Morris, IL 60450) 

*All candidates will receive an email approximately one week prior regarding their status in the process. 

PREFERENCE POINTS INFORMATION: 

A maximum of (5) preference points will be awarded as determined by the City of Morris for any one the following.* 

Education: Persons who have successfully obtained an Associate's Degree in the field of law enforcement or criminal justice - OR -  a Bachelor's Degree, in any field, from an accredited college or university. Copy of unofficial transcripts must be submitted with application to qualify. 

Experience: Persons who have been awarded a certificate of successful completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Training Course (Certified Illinois Police Officer) and are currently serving as a Law Enforcement Officer on a part-time or full-time basis within the State of Illinois. Copy of state-issued certification must be submitted with application to qualify. 

Military: Persons who were engaged in the military or naval service of the United States for a period of at least one year of active duty, and who were honorably discharged, - OR -  who are now, or have been members on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service. A copy of Form DD-214 or equivalent proof of current military service must be submitted with application to qualify.    

*Such preference points shall not be cumulative.
