The Dallas City Attorney’s Office is seeking an energetic, self-motivated attorney, with at least three to five years of experience to fill a full-time position in the Appellate Section. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
This position involves representing the City of Dallas and its employees in appeals and original proceedings in the state and federal appellate courts. The successful candidate will be responsible for drafting briefs and presenting oral arguments in the appellate courts as well as coordinating appellate brief drafting and oral argument preparation by other attorneys in the various sections of the City Attorney’s Office. The successful candidate also will be responsible for reviewing trial court motions seeking appealable interlocutory rulings or dispositive relief, advising other attorneys regarding appellate issues before and at trial, and reviewing requests for amicus brief assistance. Other duties may be assigned.
Applicants must be familiar with the procedural rules of the state and federal appellate courts and issues involving preservation of error, standards of review, and harmful error. Applicants also must have excellent research, writing, analytical, and critical thinking skills and must be organized, able to work well under pressure and collaboratively with others, handle multiple tasks, prioritize work, and have effective oral and written communication skills.
Salary is commensurate with experience. The city's comprehensive benefits package comes with the position. This position is exempt from the provisions applicable to civil service, pursuant to Chapter XVI, Section 9 of the Dallas City Charter.
