Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Deputy Division Administrator, this position functions as the Unit Director for the Criminal Litigation Unit in the Division of Legal Services, and is responsible for the budgetary administration, program coordination and related management functions and has the authority to formulate, determine and implement management policies. The position provides the oversight and direction to the Assistant Attorney General Supervisors, multiple Assistant Attorney General positions and support staff in the assigned unit. This position determines the direction of the unit and directs the oversight of a variety of legal services, through counsel and representation to the Legislature, Governor, state agencies, corporation counsel and district attorney and enforces the statutes under the Attorney General’s jurisdiction.
Salary Information
The Assistant Attorney General - Management position is in pay schedule 71 and pay range 01. The starting pay will be between $56.00 - $69.00/hour (approx. $116,480 - $143,520), depending upon qualifications. In addition, add-on pay of up to $2.75/hour may be included for this managerial position. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.
Job Details
This position may be eligible to work remotely as part of a hybrid schedule, following an initial training period. Options for remote work will be discussed during the interview. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement.
High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.
Occasional in-state travel will be required. Must be eligible to drive when required for travel.
The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.
A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.
Special Qualification: Candidate must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin State Bar upon appointment.
Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants must have professional experience in the following:
- Juris doctor degree and professional experience as an attorney
- Leading a team or supervising staff that includes legal professionals
- Conducting in-depth legal research, analyzing statutes and case law
- Writing briefs and pleadings as the primary drafter
- Litigating cases in federal or state court
In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant will have professional experience in the following:
- Managing employees that includes attorneys and legal professionals
- Working in criminal law with knowledge of constitutional, statutory, and case law relevant to criminal prosecution
- Jury trial experience as the primary or first-trial litigator
- Establishing employee priorities and objectives for professional growth and development
Special Qualification: Candidate must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin State Bar upon appointment.
