Data Storyteller

Position Overview

Groundwork Bridgeport (GWB) is seeking a passionate and creative Data Storyteller to join our team to transform complex data into engaging and impactful narratives and insight. The Data Storyteller will play a crucial role in communicating insights derived from data analysis to help the organization achieve greater impact and make better informed decisions about where to focus our urban forestry work. This person will also play a key role in education, helping various stakeholders understand the work we are doing in ways that resonate with their needs. The Data Storyteller will work closely and collaboratively with the CEO, Deputy Director, program staff, and project partner staff at The University of Chicago Data Science Institute.

Position Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities

Will include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborating with staff to develop metrics and identify key data insights and stories to communicate
  • Translating data sets into compelling visual and written narratives using ArcGIS, R, Tableau, Python, and graphic design tools
  • Crafting clear and concise narratives that effectively communicate data insights to a diverse audience, including technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Developing and maintaining data visualization dashboards and reports that are visually appealing and easy to understand
  • Presenting data-driven insights to stakeholders in a clear and engaging manner, both orally and in writing
  • Staying up-to-date with the latest data storytelling techniques and tools

Required Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Data Science, Statistics, Journalism, Communication, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in data storytelling or data visualization
  • Strong proficiency in GIS, R, Python, SQL, and graphic design tools
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills
  • Experience with data mining and analysis techniques
  • Experience creating interactive data visualizations
  • Familiarity with web development technologies
  • Experience with data storytelling software such as Tableau, Qlik Sense or Power BI
  • Storytelling and Editorial skills - ability to translate complex data into clear and concise narratives that are understandable to a non-technical audience
