Assistant Corporation Counsel (Child Support)

 

Reporting to the Deputy Corporation Counsel, the Assistant Corporation Counsel (Child Support) prepares for and makes court appearances regarding child support and other cases, performs related duties including drafting legal documents; and provides information and assistance to the Child Support Agency, attorneys, and the general public.  

Hours:  The typical work schedule with possibilities of comp time: 8:00 AM -4:30 PM

Location:  County Administration Building in Appleton, Wisconsin

Remote Work:   Potential to work up to 20% remote in future

Juris Doctor required.
Must be admitted to practice law in Wisconsin and be in good standing.
Prior child support or family law experience preferred. 

 

 Key Responsibilities:

 

The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned: 
 

  • Makes appearances at various court hearings before Court Commissioners and Judges, including actions to establish support, actions to establish arrears and payment on arrears, actions to modify support, actions to enforce orders, de novo and divorce hearings, etc.
  • Drafts various legal documents including summons and petitions to commence paternity proceedings, orders for appearance, blood test orders, contempt and lift stay motions and orders, modification orders, etc.
  • Represents the County/State in Child Support matters as well as matters establishing the paternity of non-marital children.
  • Conducts research on pertinent decisions, laws, regulations, and other matters pertaining to cases.
  • Represents the State in appealed cases involving child support.
  • Works with various specialists, answering legal questions, approving legal documents, and reviewing cases.
  • Provides information and assistance to the Child Support Agency, the general public, attorneys, and others regarding cases, settlements, and general questions.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements:

 

  • Law degree with at least one to two years legal experience.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Prior experience in the area of Family Law or Child Support.
  • Prior experience performing legal research and provision of supporting memorandum or briefs to lead counsel on various areas of law.

 

 Required or Preferred Skills:

 

  • Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including statutes, case records, case management and other handbooks, etc.
  • Ability to prepare a variety of documents including court orders, motions, summons, etc.
  • Ability to use and interpret medical, legal, and accounting terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Judges, Family Court Commissioner, Court Commissioner, attorneys, physicians, Child Support Specialists, consultants, witnesses, clients, and the general public verbally and in writing.
  • Significant experience in legal research, analysis and legal writing in various areas of law.
  • Experience litigating appeals.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including computers, calculators, and photocopier.
  • Ability to assign, supervise, and review the work of others.
  • Ability to make recommendations regarding the selection of employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percentages, and make use of the principles of descriptive statistics and statistical inference.
  • Work Environment:  Setting will consist of an office and court setting.
