CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. The Natural Resources Monitoring Specialist position located at Fort Hunter Liggett, CA supports the Range and Training Land Assessment (RTLA) Program, which helps to minimize environmental impacts associated with training and documents resource conditions and trends on the installation. The position coordinates with other training area management components, military elements, and environmental offices. The position involves strenuous field work to collect a variety of data and office tasks related to planning, data management/analysis and reporting. Tasks include development and implementation of protocols related to environmental conditions in the training areas. Primary areas of interest include vegetation communities, hydrologic and watershed condition, disturbance from military maneuvers, and other threats such as fire and noxious nonnative plants. Field data are collected, managed, analyzed and reported relative to indicators of training land condition and environmental sustainability. Results are interpreted and recommendations are made to help guide and prioritize land rehabilitation activities, with an emphasis on training mission goals, natural resources objectives, and best management practices. The position uses a variety of methodologies – collecting data, applying qualitative and quantitative approaches, geospatial analysis, and remotely sensed imagery.
The position is located at Fort Hunter Liggett in the central coast region of California. Nearby towns include King City and Paso Robles. Covering 161,000 acres (251.5 mi2), Fort Hunter Liggett is the largest Army Reserve installation in the continental United States. The landscape is dominated by extensive oak and other woodlands, shrublands and grasslands supporting abundant game and non-game wildlife. The Nacimiento River is a prominent feature running through the installation.
Work location is dependent on the needs of the partner/project/role. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person. In other instances, hybrid or remote arrangements may be possible.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Required Qualifications:
• BS Degree in range ecology, natural resources, botany, watershed science, forestry, biology or related field.
• Physically able to work outdoors, perform surveys and collect field data under all weather conditions.
• Minimum 1 year of experience with environmental or biological surveys, population sampling and survey methods, and field data collection.
• Ability to identify plants using dichotomous keys.
• Experience with operating personal computer workstations, using Microsoft Office applications such as MSWord, Excel and Access.
• Experience with Geographical Information System (ArcGIS) and Global Positioning System technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to perform basic data management.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
