Legislative and Communications Intern
Working in-person in the Arizona AFL-CIO office, the Arizona State Capitol, or other places may be necessary.
What you'll learn and be working on at the Arizona AFL-CIO:
- Learn the day-to-day functions of the Arizona Legislature through interaction between Legislators, staff, citizen and professional advocates
- Develop policy research skills through real-world policy research
- Conduct and participate in our weekly Legislative Committee meetings where you will develop personal, small group, and large group communications skills through presenting on the policy research and the legislative process on live bills in the Arizona Legislature
- Develop coalition building skills by assisting both the Legislative and Communications Directors with the planning and execution of multiple coalition and Area Labor Federation meetings, trainings, events and presentations
- Gain a deeper understanding of the Labor Movement in civil society, both nationally and in Arizona, and the institutional, organizational, and policy contexts it operates in
Legislative Responsibilities:
- Maintain current and past legislative files
- Assist the Political Director in facilitating weekly Legislative Committee Meetings
- Attending Committee Meetings at the Arizona State Capitol (virtually) and report on any Labor Related legislation
- Develop the legislator scorecard
Communications Responsibilities:
- Cataloguing and contacting AFL-CIO union affiliates, representatives, and allies
- Assist the Communications Director in maintaining and updating all social media pages and websites managed by the Arizona AFL-CIO
- Assist with communications requests from the Area Labor Federations (i.e. social media, graphics, press releases, etc.)
- Assist with the planning and execution of all Arizona AFL-CIO and Area Labor Federation's meetings and events (mostly through Zoom or other virtual means)
- Assisting with miscellaneous office tasks

Other Details
- 20 hours per week
- Mostly working in our office in Central Phoenix, however some assignments will take you to the Arizona legislature
- Occasional remote work option
- Friday morning availability is a plus but not a requirement
