Legal Intern

Salary: $15.00 Hourly

Job Type: Internship (Part-Time)

Location: Beaufort

Summary Objective
The purpose of this internship is to support the probate team with legal document preparation, conduct supervised legal research, and assist in the processing of estate, trust, guardianship, conservatorship, and therapeutic matters. The intern will gain hands-on experience in legal procedures and document management under the guidance and supervision of experienced staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
 

  • Assist in reviewing and preparing case files for hearings, ensuring documents are organized and meet procedural requirements under supervision.
  • Conduct legal research to support the probate team's efforts in case preparation, with guidance from senior staff.
  • Draft memoranda and other legal documents, under the supervision and review of experienced legal professionals.
  • Support the probate team in processing and reviewing matters related to estate, trust, guardianship, conservatorship, and therapeutic cases, as directed.
  • Communicate with the probate team and court staff to gather information and clarify procedural requirements, always under appropriate supervision.
  • Perform related tasks as assigned, contributing to the department’s overall efficiency in a learning capacity.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a student currently enrolled in high school, college, or law school.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Supplemental Information

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
