Staff Scientist (Natural Resource Scientist 2)

The Environmental Assessment Program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Staff Scientist (Natural Resource Scientist 2) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

As a Staff Scientist in the Environmental Assessment Program’s Toxics Studies Unit, you will plan and conduct environmental studies, as well as lead fieldwork to address toxic contaminants statewide. The data collected from these studies will be used to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of toxics control efforts, conduct source identification efforts, and assess waterbodies for toxic contaminants. This role offers an exciting opportunity to travel and work in some of the most beautiful locations across Washington state.

Program Mission: The mission of the Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) is to measure, assess, and communicate environmental conditions in Washington state. EAP’s Toxics Studies Unit conducts long term monitoring/assessment and environmental forensics studies for toxics and toxins across the state.
Telework options for this position: This position will have flexibility of a hybrid schedule, empowering work from home and office, providing less time in traffic and shrinking your carbon footprint. This position will be eligible for up to a 90% telework schedule, with in-person meetings monthly. Duties
What makes this role unique?
This position is challenging as you must understand the importance of quality assurance and strictly follow established scientific standards and methods as you assess scientific data and write and publish findings. At times, you will need to travel across the state and work long hours in the field at remote locations, facing various weather conditions and rugged terrain. You must prioritize the safety of yourself and your colleagues in the field. Strong communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to collaborate on project scope and study design process will be crucial to your success in this role.
What you will do:
- Oversee field monitoring for toxics studies, which includes preparing and using specialized scientific equipment, calibrating instruments, and collecting and preparing environmental samples (water, sediment, and tissue), as well as measuring stream flow. This work may involve the use of specialized boats. Ensure project field equipment, boats, and vehicles remain in good working order.
- Prepare quality assurance project plans, standard operating procedures, scientific reports, and technical memos.
- Perform data reduction, analysis, and entry of project data into Ecology’s Environmental Information Management System.
- Conduct statistical evaluation and quality assurance review of environmental data.
- Use various software programs for data analysis, mapping, and report preparation.
- Provide field and office support to other scientist in the Toxics Studies Unit for other environmental studies.
- Conduct technical review of departmental publications, regulations, standard operating procedures, and environmental criteria.
- Assist with data management for Ecology's Water Quality Assessment process.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
- 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
- 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
A total of seven (7) years of experience and/or education as described below:
- Research work experience which includes environmental sampling or toxic chemical characterization.
- Education: involving a major study in chemistry, environmental science, or closely allied field.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
