Position Title: Public Health Project Specialist –Care Closet Support Specialist
SERVICE DETAILS
Term of Service: January 13 or 20, 2025 to September 15, 2025 (35 weeks)
Slot Type and Minimum Service Hours: 1,200 hours (TQT); averaging 37 hours per week
Living Stipend: $14,000 (TQT)
Educational Award: $5,176.50 (TQT)

Position Title: Public Health Project Specialist –Care Closet Support Specialist
Reports To: Dr. Susan Wheeler, Director of Health
ABOUT THE HOST SITE
The Lansing School District is an urban public-school district serving the city of Lansing, Michigan. The district is comprised of nearly 10,000 students representing a racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse population. The district provides free, appropriate public education (FAPE) to students in grades pre-Kindergarten through 12thgrade and beyond including a robust adult education and non-English language speakers program.
During the recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, our families are experiencing the layered burden of physical, emotional, and financial hardship while navigating the impact of generational poverty, food and housing insecurity, and limited access to tangible environmental resources.
MEMBER IMPACT
This member will be pivotal in the support of the BIPOC Care Closet with priorities being the development and sustainability of operations.
POSITION DETAILS
Program Operations:
· Creating or updating policies and procedures
· Developing, updating or implementing software needed to execute tasks consistently, efficiently and effectively
· Creating knowledge sharing processes to improve organization expertise needed to effectively and efficiently operate
· Coordinate with the OSC to develop and maintain a comprehensive BIPOC Care closet distribution plan so that items may be provided in an equitable and inclusive manner
· Assess the effectiveness and impact of the BIPOC Care Closet through internal data collection and analysis
Program Development and Sustainability:
· Collaborate with the Office of School Culture staff and Health Resource Advocates to maintain a well-stocked and well-organized BIPOC focused Care Closet within the school district
· Develop a well-rounded community action funding plan to create an enduring funding source to obtain goods and products for the Care Closet
· Collaborate with the OSC to identify and engage community stakeholders in the expansion of the BIPOC Care Closet
· Create community partnerships with local faith-based organizations in support of the Care Closet
Marginal Functions – none.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills –
· Two to four years of experience in office and system support
· Proficiency in use of computers and software including: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Zoom, design tools such as Canva
· Must be proficient in Microsoft products including: Word (editing, formatting professional documents, and troubleshooting), Excel (data and reporting), Access (database query)
· Ability to keep accurate reports and records.
· Ability to engage with a wide variety of community groups, faith-based groups, and stakeholders.
· Well-organized, efficient with time, consistent work delivery and a commitment to complete projects.
· Possess a valid driver’s license and ability to transport goods and products as needed.
· Self-thinker, positive attitude and ability to critically think
Desired Knowledge and Skills –
· Experience with grant writing, preferred
Service Conditions:
· On-site, In person office setting (school based) – Office located at 4200 Wainwright, Lansing, MI
· Frequently, ability to lift 20 pounds, ability to bend, squat, kneel and lift packages to shelves
· Interacts daily with other members, employees, the public including vulnerable populations (elderly, youth, socioeconomic status, racially diverse individuals)
Service Schedule:
· Regular service schedule will be during regular business hours: Monday-Friday between 8am-5pm
· Members are required to participate and attend monthly ICHD Public Health AmeriCorps professional development, quarterly ICHD AmeriCorps professional development, participate in events including national service days, and regional and local service projects.
· Sick or personal days are allowed, but members lose possible days to earn the required number of hours needed to successfully complete the term of service. There are additional benefits offered if the member has a compelling personal circumstance.
AMERICORPS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
· Participate in monthly ICHD PHA AmeriCorps Training and Professional Development
· Participate in quarterly ICHD AmeriCorps Professional Development and Service
· Participate National Days of Service (9/11 Day of Service, MLK Day of Service, Russ Mawby Regional Day of Service, Youth Volunteer Day)
· Attend AmeriCorps orientation at the Ingham County Health Department
· All members will participate in an end of service performance evaluation
· All members will be required to submit bi-weekly time sheets, quarterly data reports, and all other data tasks requested by the Host Site
· All Public Health AmeriCorps members are required to complete “Foundational Training for Public Health AmeriCorps” by the CDC
Public Health AmeriCorps Members should possess:
· a desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people;
· a willingness to learn and serve others;
· an ability to work independently and in a team environment successfully, and
· strong organizational, writing, and oral communication skills, and a high attention to detail
AmeriCorps Program Eligibility
· be 17 years or older at the start of service (no upper age limit)
· be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien
· Agree to and pass a national service criminal history check with eligibility verification in accordance with 45 CFR 2540.202.
