CZ Biohub SF Summer Intern
CZ Biohub San Francisco is seeking talented undergraduate students to join the organization for the 11-week Summer Internship Program (June 2, 2025 - August 15, 2025). The successful candidates will spend the summer immersed in real-world science with our biomedical researchers, data scientists, and engineers. They will not only gain technical experience working on CZ Biohub SF top line goals, but also soft skills such as communication and critical thinking, as well as the opportunity to network with scientists who provide valuable advice and mentorship.
The internship program goals are to:
- Help interns build a strong foundation in scientific research and laboratory skills
- Provide scientific education and enrichment to underserved and underrepresented groups in STEM (Students from historically marginalized or underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.)
- Establish valuable and sustainable mentoring relationships
- Equip interns with the skills and network needed to be competitive in STEM
- Build a pipeline of STEM professionals
Possible Projects/Responsibilities
- Incorporating machine learning techniques to improve Ultrack's performance and reduce the amount of manual fine-tuning required to obtain optimal performance (AI Imaging)
- Applying machine learning approaches to extract meaningful information from live-cell microscopy zebrafish embryo datasets to make predictions about cell fate and cell behavior (AI Imaging)
- Generating endogenous labeled cell lines for organelle markers to evaluate changes during infection by herpes viruses (Arias Group)
- Conducting a direct comparison of the response profiles between Zika and Dengue virus over the first 24 hours of infection in a cell line (Computational Biology)
- Working on developing new methods and analysis strategies for OrgIP and implementing them in Python (Computational Biology)
- Contributing to projects for imaging metadata portal (Computational Microscopy)
- Partnering with mentor/manager to develop experiments related to virology (DeRisi Lab)
- Characterizing the spatial RNA expression patterns of key signaling molecules at single-cell resolution in developing neuromasts to gain deeper insights (Jacobo Group)
- Using ML/AI tools for protein modeling and prediction (e.g. Alphafold, diffusion models, etc.) to generate testable hypothesis, followed by wet lab experimentation to validate the findings (Protein Science Group)
- Learning wet lab experimentation skills such as PCR, cloning, etc. while progressing research on fish live imaging (Royer Group)
Program Experience
- Receive support through a 11-week research experience
- Receive mentorship to support your personal and professional development
- Gain and enhance your technical and transferable skills through trainings and seminars
- Learn how to design, plan, and carry out laboratory and/or computational scientific experiments
- Present at the end-of-program symposium
- Build relationships with peers and colleagues
- Enjoy social events and activities in San Francisco, CA
Program Eligibility
- Must be a current undergraduate student (enrolled full time at a college or university both Spring 2025 AND Fall 2025 terms)
- Must be able to commit to the 11-week Summer Internship Program (June 2, 2025 - August 15, 2025)
- Must be able to be onsite at the SF Biohub for the duration of the program
