Security Specialist
Key Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid driver’s license
- Must be able to obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance
- Some travel may be required
Physical Demands
Work is primarily sedentary; however, some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of books, files, paper, and similar objects is required.
Major Duties:
- Performs security work using policies, practices and methods of security administration.
- Reviews requests for investigations concerning security clearances, requirements, and violations.
- Participates in security compliance reviews, surveys and inspections of all FBI maintaining NSI and other sensitive information.
- Assists in preparing security plans and procedures while maintaining historical records, directives, executive order, and other related documents and databases.
- Initiates indices checks, arrest record checks and ELSUR checks.
- Analyzes correspondence regarding possible security concerns and assessments.
- Conducts and prepares security plans and procedures.
- Participates in inspections of facilities and areas designated as secure areas for procession and storage of SCI and classified material.
- Recommends safeguards, space constrictions, tracking systems, and information handling systems providing sensitive information.

Specialized Experience (SE):
GS-9: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
- Applied policies and procedures of security investigative matters.
- Conducted security interviews and briefings in order to prepare analysis.
GS-11: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
- Reviewed, analyzed and resolved security issues to protect personnel, data, and facilities.
- Analyzed investigative reports to develop information regarding security vulnerabilities; developed leads; and proposed recommendations.
- Effectively and efficiently planned and carried out assigned tasks.
- Interpreted, evaluated, and applied security guidelines and policies.
- Conducted security interviews and briefings in order to prepare analysis.
Education
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
All degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:
GS-9: Applicant must have a master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
GS-11: Applicant must have a Ph.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related.
