Are you interested in managing a new section tasked with finding solutions to the fine particulate matter across the State, then this job is for you. The Air Quality Planning Branch is seeking an enthusiastic and organized Air Resources Supervisor I to manage the newly created Particulate Matter Analysis Section. We are looking for a passionate leader who would take the initiative to develop common sense solutions to statewide particulate matter problems driven by science. The most qualified person would have good managements skills, the ability to understand particulate matter pollution, and the ability to take highly technical information and convey it in a manner that can be understood by the public.

The Air Quality Planning Branch is seeking an Air Resource Supervisor I to manage the new Particulate Matter Analysis Section in the Air Quality Planning Branch and oversee the PM2.5 designation process including coordinating with local districts, U.S. EPA, and internal and external stakeholders along with understanding the chemistry of the particulate matter problem across California. Duties include:

Supervises and direct staff related to the PM2.5 designation process including coordinating with local districts, communities U.S. EPA Region 9 and internal stakeholders such as emission inventory teams and modeling;.

Oversee and direct staff in technical, policy, and administrative analyses needed in the development of approvable PM SIPs for PM for the new PM2.5 NAAQS including meeting with U.S. EPA, communities and other stakeholders;

Supervises and directs staff in the following tasks: analysis of relationships between PM2.5 air quality data, with emissions inventory and meteorology. Identifies policy direction to be given to districts, direct staff role in various proceedings, and/or information to be gathered. Handle negotiations with district planning staff and other affected parties.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required. 

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense.

  • Standard office environment (artificial lighting, controlled temperature, etc.).
