Description:
The Open Space Supervisor will develop, implement, and oversee maintenance and operation plans for the City's open spaces, trails, waterfront, and regional parks. Our regional parks include Shoshone Falls, Dierkes Lake, Auger Falls, Old Towne Parkway, and the Canyon Rim Trail. This position involves office and outdoor work, often in adverse weather conditions. The Open Space Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and managing the work of Park Operators and Seasonal Staff, and being a point of contact for Independent Contractors or Concessionaires
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement maintenance plans for natural and ornamental landscapes and trails.
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate department employees, ensuring adequate staffing.
- Plan and coordinate work schedules and oversee special projects.
- Conduct regular inspections of open spaces and initiate appropriate maintenance.
- Monitors the completion of job assignments to ensure compliance with standards and instructions, adjusting assignments and time frames as necessary.
- Manage contracts for security and concessions.
- Oversee the operation of Shoshone Falls and Dierkes Park during the tourist season.
- Manage regional park spaces to include Auger Falls, Heritage Park, Old Towne Parkway, Canyon Rim Trail, Shoshone Falls, and Dierkes Lake parks.
- Build and maintain relationships with user groups in City’s open spaces
- Assist with snow removal in park areas and trail systems.
- Participate in asset inventory and management and budget preparation.
- Respond to citizen inquiries in a courteous and timely manner.
- Communicate regularly with other departments to maximize operational effectiveness.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Knowledge of current supervisory practices, natural resource management, arboricultural techniques, and safe work practices.
- Skills in speaking, listening, implementation planning, information gathering, operations analysis, judgment, decision-making, critical thinking, and time management.
- Ability to gather information, apply logic and reasoning, train and manage staff, maintain composure under stress, create a positive work environment, interpret laws and policies, and establish effective working relationships.
- Demonstrated skills in Leadership and supervisory training, dirt trail development and maintenance, stakeholder outreach, public speaking, outdoor recreation practices, and wildlife management techniques (Required).
Education, Certifications, and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalency (required).
- Sixty (60) college credits in Horticulture, Park Management, Forestry, Natural Resources, Water Resource Management, or related field.
- Three (3) years of experience in natural resource management, equipment operation and maintenance, and supervisory roles.
- Idaho State Professional Applicator’s License. Required within one (1) year of hire
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Essential Physical Abilities:
- Vision or observation abilities for monitoring work progress.
- Manual dexterity for operating equipment.
- Physical mobility and reflexes for lifting at least 40 pounds, working in trenches, and accessing various parks, waterways, and trail systems.
