Position Description: 
This position will assist the Surface Water Quality Program with review of recreational and fish life propagation use classifications of South Dakota waters - Fishable/Swimmable. Position requires an ability to work outdoors in variable weather and rugged terrain around waterways. Overnight travel is required.

Interns will collect data as part of a team of scientists. They will have opportunities to learn and assist in the collection of water samples, use of multi-parameter water quality meters, velocity meters, fish collection and identification, and physical habitat measurements of streams and wetlands. Field trips typically last two to three days and include overnight stays in hotels. Office duties will include verification of field data through use of GIS, environmental databases, and statistical analysis programs.

Qualifications: 

Preferred applicants will have knowledge in one or more of the following areas: biology, chemistry, hydrology, natural resource management, GIS, data management, or statistical analysis. Applicants must be able to work in the field in a variety of weather conditions. Possession of a valid driver's license is required.

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program. 

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
