Internship for a Cross Country MS Charity Ride - Summer 2025

Bike the US for MS is a nonprofit charity that organizes cross country bicycle tours to raise awareness and funds for multiple sclerosis assistance, and to volunteer for individuals living with MS. To learn more about the organization, routes, and teams please visit www.biketheusforms.org.
An internship opportunity is available for anyone interested in gaining work experience in group management, outdoor leadership, public relations, marketing, social media marketing, event planning, communications, hospitality and non-profit management. Interns will assist in the coordination and leading of a cross country bicycle tour while traveling across the United State. Ready to ride into your future?
As a Route Leader Intern, you will be able to develop your skills by covering the following responsibilities.
- The primary responsibility of the Route Leaders is to care for the team by looking out for their safety, keeping them well informed, and keeping team morale high.
- MANAGEMENT / LEADERSHIP: Work with your management team of 4 people to coordinate a well run trip and lead the team of 20-30 people.
- COMMUNICATION: Provide clear communication with your co-leaders and the cyclists throughout the day concerning route logistics, safety, services available at the end of the day, and how to prepare for the following day.
- PUBLIC RELATIONS: Represent the organization in a positive way while traveling through a variety of communities, working with local businesses, and coordinating with MS support groups.
- EVENT PLANNING: Follow through on the set schedule of multiple stops throughout the day and staying in a new location every night. Sharpen your problem solvings skills when adjustments need to be made on the fly.
- NON-PROFIT MANAGEMENT: Keep multiple sclerosis at the front of everyone's mind and lead the team in improving the lives of people living with MS by promoting awareness, fundraising, direct assistance and reaching out to various organizations across the country to encourage support.
- MARKETING: Promote the ride and interact with followers on various social media apps by sharing the incredible photos and videos of scenery and team camaraderie.
- HOSPITALITY: Ensure all church, community center, and campground hosts feel welcomed for opening their dors to the team. Deliver an incredible trip for cyclists who are striving to complete a lifelong goal.
How this is achieved:
- The primary positions of the 4 person Route Leader team is to alternate between one day on the BIKE, and one day in the Rest Stop Van (RSV) or the Lead Van & Trailer (LVT).
- RSV: Stop every 20-30 miles to provide water, rest and encouragement for the team and to keep track of everyone's progress through good communication.
- LVT: Drive the route to ensure it is safe, and head directly to the end point to meet with our host, and provide clear communication for what the team can expect at the end of the day.
- BIKE: Provide support for the cyclists, and assist your fellow Route Leaders.
- Navigation of support vehicles, map reading, and helping develop detours if necessary.
- Prior to the trip, one hour a week assisting with securing accommodations and 1 or 2 monthly Zoom meetings from home.
- Pre / Post trip there will be additional training days or vehicle transportation.
- Must be able to commit to the full duration of the trip, be able to lift 50+ pounds, enjoy camping, traveling, and generally being outside for 30-70 days, be able to work outside in a variety of quickly changing weather conditions and environments, work well as a team member and leader, if you do enjoy biking you will have ample opportunity to alternate days with the Route Leader team between driving support vehicles and riding your bike with the team, and have a valid US driver’s license.

- The is an unpaid volunteer position, but there is reimbursement for additional personal expenses up to $3,250 for the Cape Cod / Northern Tier combo trip and $1,650 for the Olympic Peninsula / Pacific Coast combo trip.
We have two opportunities in 2025.
- NORTHERN TIER - May 28th to August 16th. Start in Boston, MA for a one week training tour around Cape Cod before starting your Cross Country adventure in Bar Harbor, ME and traveling west through Niagara Falls, the Great Lakes, Minneapolis, Glacier National Park, and the Cascades before finishing in Seattle, WA.

- PACIFIC COAST - June 22nd to August 1st. Starts in Seattle, WA for a one week training tour around the Olympic Peninsula, and finishes in San Diego, CA while passing through Tillamook, the Oregon Coast, Redwood Forests, San Francisco, Malibu, Santa Monica, and so much more.
