The Prince George’s County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is seeking a talented individual to support our mission by creating engaging and informative publications, including, but not limited to, brochures, reports, flyers, postcards, banners, posters, long-form documents (some over 150 pages), infographics, and digital content.
 
In this exciting role, you will use your expertise in design, composition, typography, layout, color theory, and project management to ensure our publications meet the highest standards of quality and consistency. You will collaborate with authors, designers, and production staff to coordinate the review and revision process while adhering to established style guides and production schedules.
 
The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for design, some editing skills, and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite. This includes but is not limited to InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and other relevant software, which is essential. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills are also key to success in this role. Experience with government publications is a plus.

Examples of Important Duties:

  • Able to create visually appealing and effective graphics, including logos, brochures, websites, social media posts, and other marketing materials.
  • Possess an outstanding portfolio that demonstrates your ability to use text and visuals effectively to communicate complex ideas across various media (print, digital, and social platforms).
  • Use industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) to produce high-quality designs.
  • Maintain and uphold brand identity across all design projects, ensuring a cohesive and recognizable look and feel.
  • Prepare files and documents for print or web for in-house and outside vendors.
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest design trends, technologies, and best practices to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Be open to input and revisions, making necessary adjustments to designs based on client or team input.
  • Serve as publication project coordinator when assigned, maintaining project files and meeting deadlines.
  • Maintain organized project files and design assets for easy access and future reference.
  • Participate in pre-production planning meetings to ensure a coordinated approach to publications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, Graphic Design, Web Design, Exhibit Design, Journalism, Editing, Technical Writing or any related field.
  2. Two (2) years of experience in graphic arts and editing, commercial arts, visual arts, event design, exhibit design, or related areas.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
  4. Pass Commission medical examination.


Desired skills:
 

Proven experience in creating pleasing and engaging designs on time and budget.

  • A portfolio that demonstrates mastery of print and digital design best practices.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, Acrobat Pro, and other relevant software.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

The M-NCPPC offers a competitive salary range of $60,849 to $107,768 at the Publications Design Specialist level (salary is commensurate with education and experience) with excellent benefits including generous leave, extensive health coverage, deferred compensation plan, and employee pension plan.
The Prince George’s County Planning Department is conveniently located in Largo, Maryland near Metro and I-495.
