Are you a recent graduate looking for an opportunity to develop a federal career? Want to help ensure a climate-resilient, sustainable future for our nation's agriculture, forests, and natural resources? A position as an Agronomist with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) might be a great fit for you!

NRCS is seeking recently graduated or graduating individuals with a passion for the environment and commitment to action through public service to join our Pathways Recent Graduate Program. As an Agronomist with NRCS, your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Providing technical leadership and assistance in agronomic, precision agriculture, and soil health to individual and group land users.
  • Assessing and evaluating soil and water resource management problems and farming practices on tracts of land within assigned areas.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of agronomic practices, identifying technical problems and/or deficiencies, recommending improvements, and motivating landowners to implement and maintain sound conservation management systems.
  • Assisting with vegetative and management practices to secure a balanced program of soil and moisture conservation.
  • Providing technical assistance in promoting conservation tillage, crop rotations, and nutrient and pest management through tours, conferences, and direct assistance to field office personnel and producers.
  • Assisting in conducting on-the-job and formal training in agronomy to internal and external customers, providing information to field offices on current agronomic techniques for inventorying, analyzing, and selecting treatment alternatives.

Pathways candidates will receive on-the-job training and exposure to a variety of functional areas within Agronomy, Plant Ecology, Soil Conservation, and related natural resource conservation programs. As training advances and proficiency is demonstrated, work assignments will become increasingly challenging in order to provide formal experience in the principles, concepts, work processes, and regulations of assigned programs. All assignments are developmental in nature and designed to provide candidates with the necessary competencies to prepare them for conversion to a permanent position within the agency following completion of Pathways requirements.
