This is a combined closed and open examination. Applicants for the closed examination must be an existing classified employee of the City of Canton and have completed their probationary period by. All other applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or have a permanent resident card, must be a High School graduate or possess a G.E.D., and be at least 18 years of age.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This is a professional, managerial position that requires experience and expertise in the fields of customer service, employee management, account monitoring, backflow prevention plus water meter selection, sizing, testing, repair, and replacement. An employee in this classification uses a variety of techniques and computer software to generate and track work orders, analyze data, and maintain detailed records and reports of metered accounts, meter testing, meter performance, and Meter Transmitting Unit performance. Maintains meter shop inventory. This individual is responsible for the comprehensive management of the customer service and water meter testing, repair, and replacement group. Additionally, the Meter System Supervisor contributes to process development and procedural improvements.
The Meter System Supervisor works under the direct supervision of the Water Department Superintendent or their designee.

The primary role of the Meter System Supervisor is acting as the department’s customer service and meter shop manager. This position works closely with Utility Billing, the Water Dispatcher, Water Engineering, vendors, and our customers to maintain an efficient and effective operation, outstanding customer service, and accurate metering of our customer accounts.
Examples of routine work include but are not limited to:
- Manages the work environment and work flow of the customer service and meter shop employees.
- Assigns priorities and distributes work to the group’s employees following up on the completeness of this work.
- Resolves difficult customer service issues in a professional manner.
- Closely monitors commercial and industrial accounts for abnormalities and promptly resolves any issues.
- Closely monitors commercial, industrial, and residential meter trends for indication of failing performance.
- Advise others on the installation, programing, troubleshooting, rebuilding, and testing of all sizes and types of water meters both in the shop and in the field.
- Closely monitors the Automated Meter Reading System and oversees the proper functioning, programing, and replacement of MTU’s as needed.
- Maintains accurate records and inventory control.
- Oversees the comprehensive Meter Testing Program.
- Determines the proper meter type and size of replacements.
- Determines the correct backflow device for a specific application.
- Routinely communicates with customers, customer account representatives, and meter equipment suppliers.
- Maintains a working stock of MTU’s, meters, repair parts, and related testing equipment.
- Keeps the meter shop area in a neat, clean, organized manner.
- Complies with safety protocols, plumbing code, regulations, and industry standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or equivalent. A minimum of five (5) years of combined post-secondary education and/or experience in a water or similar utility with management, project oversight, customer service, or similar experience. Experience in the fundamental use of computers, software, computerized work order systems, inventory management systems, and spreadsheets. Knowledgeable of backflow prevention rules, regulations, and requirements is beneficial. Knowledgeable of AWWA standards for meter selection and performance and fundamental plumbing work and plumbing codes. Must exhibit a high degree of emotional intelligence, outstanding communication skills, and outstanding customer service skills. Must be very organized, responsible, and able to work independently. Ohio EPA Distribution System Certificate and Backflow Prevention training are beneficial. Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license at all times.
