Child Development Teacher (20)

POSITION DESCRIPTION – California State Preschool Children’s Centers:

 

Under the direction of the Direct Service Coordinator and supervision of the Child Development Site Supervisor, the Child Development Teacher is responsible for the implementation of a high-quality, comprehensive, and developmentally appropriate program to meet the individual needs of children and their families.  The Child Development Teacher will interact with children as a positive model and a facilitator of learning, develop and implement curriculum and daily activities and an effective learning environment, supervise and interact with young children and participate in child assessment processes.  The Teacher will promote positive growth and development, the high-quality children’s program, and support parents toward family health and stability.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: [May include, but not limited to the following.]

 

  1. Implement elements of the high-quality early childhood education program 
  2. Ensure that the cognitive, physical, social emotional, creative needs, and educational needs of students are met
  3. Assist the Site Supervisor in performing regular inspections to ensure a safe, orderly, and appropriate learning environment outdoors and indoors in accordance with community care licensing and Title 5 regulations
  4. Engage children through instructional strategies to facilitate learning and optimal progress across the domains of development
  5. Participate in curriculum development and implementation, to provide a quality children’s program including group time, transitions, and learning activities
  6. Conduct child observation, record keeping, and assessment processes to track children’s progress and learning including the Desired Results Developmental Profile system
  7. Interact with families and participate in parent conferences
  8. Implement elements of the nutrition program in compliance with Child Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) regulations
  9. Supervise assigned support staff
  10. Promote a safe and healthy environment
  11. Embrace and participate in supplementary support service programs
  12. Assist in bathroom support for children in the toilet learning process

 

QUALIFICATIONS:   

 

Knowledge of/Ability to:

  1. Apply principles and practices supporting child development and high-quality early childhood education
  2. Implement a development-based curriculum, including activities and experiences with integrated multicultural and anti-bias elements, using effective instructional strategies
  3. Work and interact effectively with children and families from diverse populations, cultures, and backgrounds
  4. Communicate and work cooperatively, effectively, and collaboratively with all staff
  5. Demonstrate a reliable, punctual, and stable working style in the performance of assignments
  6. Display stability, tact, flexibility, respect, and support in interactions with children, parents, staff, and the community
  7. Ensure children’s success and learning
  8. Principles of confidentiality, collaboration, and professionalism
  9. Understanding of diverse families and their needs and ways to support them
  10. Work productively with independent initiative
  11. Support families in their effort toward success and stability
  12. Participate as an integral member of Child Development Programs and Services

 

Certification, Experience, and Training:

  1. Hold a valid and unexpired Child Development Teacher Permit or qualify for a Child Development Teacher Permit by meeting the attached Permit criteria.
  2. Experience working directly with preschool-age children preferred.
  3. Pediatric First Aid and CPR certified (required within 90 days of hire)

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

Primarily works in an indoor school or playground environment with furniture and equipment built to accommodate preschool-aged children.

Child Development Teacher Permit

Authorization

A Child Development Teacher Permit authorizes the holder to provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child care and development program, and supervise a CDP Associate Teacher, a CDP Assistant, and an aide.

 

Requirements

To qualify for the Child Development Teacher Permit, individuals must satisfy all of the requirements listed in one of the following options:

Option 1

  1. Complete all General Requirements (see Terms and Definitions)**
  2. Complete 16 semester units in general education, including at least one course in each of the following areas: humanities and/or fine arts, social sciences, math and/or science, and English and/or language arts.
  3. Complete 175 days of experience in an instructional capacity in a child care and development program, working at least three hours per day within the last four years. This experience must be verified by submitting an original letter from the employer on official letterhead.

School-Age Emphasis under this option requires that 12 of the 24 semester units of early childhood education/child development be in school-age course work.

Option 2

  1. Complete an associate degree or higher in early childhood education or child development or a related field.
  2. Complete three semester units or four quarter units of supervised field experience in an early childhood education setting
    • School-Age Emphasis under this option may be obtained by completion of an associate degree or higher in school-age education, including three semester units of supervised field experience in an early childhood education setting.

 

Term and Renewal

The Child Development Teacher Permit is issued for five years and is renewable for successive five-year periods upon completion of 105 hours of professional growth. This permit may be renewed online. Permit holders who complete the requirements for a higher level permit within three years of the date of initial issuance may submit verification of completion of requirements, an application (form 41-4Open PDF in current window.) for the higher level permit, and half the application processing fee. 

 

** General Requirements (Required for the Teacher, Master Teacher, Site Supervisor and Program Director Permit levels)

 

Completion of 24 semester units of course work in early childhood education or child development, including at least one three-semester unit (or four-quarter unit) course in each of the following core areas:

  • Child/human growth and development
  • Child, family, and community, or child and family relations
  • Programs/curriculum

 

The following may be used as partial fulfillment of the 24-semester unit requirement:

  1. Supervised field experience may be used towards the overall 24-semester unit requirement as long as the course included both a field work and classroom component. The same field work course may not be used toward the experience requirement. Submission of a course description may be necessary, or
  2. Possession of a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential may be used as nine semester units of credit toward the overall 24 semester unit requirement. Other:

  1. To comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees must provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States.
  2. FINGERPRINTING FOR CONDUCTING A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION IS REQUIRED (and completed upon offer of employment)
  3.
