Public Policy & Human Rights Intern

A Little About Us

 

Yahoo’s Global Public Policy team is a small and dynamic team that includes the Business and Human Rights Program (BHRP) and resides in the Yahoo Legal Department.  We are responsible for representing and protecting Yahoo’s strategic interests before legislators and policymakers. Additionally, the BHRP engages with other companies, civil society, academics, investors, multi-stakeholder initiatives and Yahoo employees across the globe to provide leadership on human rights issues that intersect Yahoo’s business and operations.

 

Together we support colleagues, clients and customers with the highest levels of expertise and professionalism. We solve some of the most cutting edge and challenging policy issues in our industry. We’re also all about having fun. Yahoo is a fast-paced, goal-oriented and sometimes zany place, and we fully embrace that here in the Legal Department. 

 

Responsibilities

You will work directly with the head of Yahoo’s Business & Human Rights Program and along with other members of the Global Public Policy team and various senior-level employees (including from the legal, security, communications, privacy, trust & safety, deals and product teams) to help to:

  • Develop and drive the BHRP’s strategy to protect and promote Yahoo’s users’ free expression and privacy rights both internally and externally;
  • Develop and implement strategies to protect and promote Yahoo’s business on key policy areas, including privacy, AI, and limitations to liability, and specific product offerings, such as News, Finance, Sports, and digital advertising;
  • Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory proposals, determine their potential impact on the company, and develop proactive strategies to address;
  • Review Yahoo’s policies, processes and operations to identify and mitigate human rights risks and to find opportunities to highlight human rights impacts that are positive;
  • Conduct research and write background reports for Human Rights Due Diligence as well as topics related to technology and human rights;
  • Perform administrative tasks, as determined by GPP and BHRP priorities.

 

A Lot About You

 

You are an ethical, brilliant, hard-working student, who gets along well with others, and is pragmatic yet idealistic enough to believe that you can change the world. 

  • Actively enrolled in a graduate degree program (JD, M.A., M.B.A. etc) with a strong record of achievement
  • Able to complete a 8-12 week full time (40 hr a week) internship 
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in law, policy, or human rights;
  • Able to think strategically, take initiative, and work independently
  • A strong communicator—both written and verbal—with the ability to describe and distill complex issues to audiences with different levels of understanding
  • Experienced working in cross-functional, multinational settings or across different cultures and in building effective working relationships
  • Passionate and curious about technology with a sound understanding of the online space and superior research, writing, and presentation skills;

 

Preferred

  • Familiarity with the broad range of internet policy issues
  • International work or study experience
  • Fluency in a foreign language
  • Based in Washington, D.C. for summer 2025
