Legal/Risk Management Intern

Position Summary
The Legal/Risk Management Intern will work with two highly collaborative teams, splitting their time between the Office of the General Counsel and NYSTRS’ Risk Management Department. They will have exposure to a wide variety of legal, compliance, and enterprise risk management issues. The intern will primarily focus on pension benefit work. The intern will also have exposure to the legal investment, transactional, and legislative work as well as other areas as department needs dictate and time permits.
The Intern may be permitted to work remotely up to 40% at the discretion of the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled in law school with at least one semester completed.

Job Duties
The duties of the Legal/Risk Management Intern (Summer 2025) include, but will not be limited to, the following:
- Reviewing legal documents submitted to NYSTRS (i.e. trusts, POAs, domestic relations orders)
- Responding to member and retiree inquiries regarding legal issues
- Assisting with Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests
- Researching relevant legal issues and drafting memoranda of law
- Assisting with documentation and policy organization
- Reviewing compliance policies and procedures
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
As NYSTRS, the Legal Department, and the Risk Management Department needs dictate.
Salary Grade
This is a non-graded position.
Salary Range
$20.00 per hour.
