Do you have interest in becoming an Optometrist in the Air Force? Air Force Optometrists are commissioned officers who provide comprehensive eye care to Airmen, their families, and other eligible beneficiaries. They play a crucial role in maintaining the vision and eye health of Air Force personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive eye examinations
  • Diagnose and treat eye diseases and disorders
  • Prescribe and fit corrective lenses
  • Provide pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing eye surgery
  • Participate in flight physicals and other specialized military eye care programs
  • Collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure overall patient health
  • Maintain medical records and prepare reports
  • Supervise optometry technicians and support staff

Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP)

The HPSP is a highly competitive program that offers aspiring optometrists and other healthcare professionals the opportunity to complete their education with full financial support from the Air Force.

Benefits:

  • Full tuition and required fees coverage
  • Monthly stipend of approximately $2,870 for living expenses
  • Reimbursement for books and most educational supplies

Service Commitment:

  • Serve as an active duty officer for one year for each year of scholarship participation, with a minimum three-year commitment
